Your LR is the place wjere freinds gather so it is best if all the seating relates to good convversation so maybe start there IMO you have very confused pieces that do not eallt go together in a nice way. I like the soafe not the pillows I like the yellow chair with the sofa but not the other chairs at all . Too much furniture wher epieces are placed fo no purpose and just too much eye clutter . My advice is to remove everything from the space except the sofa and the yellow chair . Then think how you want to feel when you enter this space . Right now it is almost impossible to get a feel for how it looks from your entry so maybe show us that

Do you have a separate room for watching tv? The double chairs look like they were meant for tv watching.

My pleasure...does not have to be Asian inspired decor but the concept would stay the same.

Your 2 colors + cream and black accents are a calm combo, so that's a good start.

Will you be purchasing any new items and can you provide your room’s layout, including structural components, along with the measurement if you are looking for another layout. How much editing are you willing to do? It’s hard to provide relevant advice without knowing your parameters.

If buying, keep to simple lines with natural and earthy components for the Feng Shui vibe you are after. Simplify and maybe start with the fireplace if open to painting and changing mantle.

I think i need to incorporate larger pieces like i see there in your pic and take away all the little clutter

Maureen i wont buy any furniture i already got this stuff this past year and feel i made wrong choices …. so for now i will have to work with what i have. i am open to anything that makes the room flow i have a family who lives next door with grandchildren so we need seating for 10 at any given time making it challenging

    Maureen your pictures are pretty

Not a pro but in my opinion you have nice basics but too many small objects.

For instance if it were me I would remove all objects of the top of the bookshelf behind the sofa except one, and remove the picture above it.

Remover the mirror above the gold chair, then center the floor lamp on that wall.

Remove all objects from the fireplace mantel, leaving the clock and center it on the mantel. Remove all objects from the wall above the mantel, except the sconces. Remove the end tables from each side of the fireplace, leave that area without anything, your windows and drapes are the feature.

Remove all items from the cabinet beside your recliners. Leave the small picture frame, lamp and 1 other item making a grouping of 3 on that end, leave your plant on the other end. Remove all decor items from that window including the items on the top of it, and the picture beside the window.

The decor above your recliners should be centered on the recliners not on the window above.

Remove all items from your coffee table except those in the round tray and the magazine, and remove items from under the coffee table.

In other words, declutter. You have nice items but just way too many, which in my mind is what is disturbing and blocking the flow.

    Good luck.

By our 70's many of us have accumulated tons of stuff.
We tend to hold on to it despite knowing that almost nobody else really wants it.
We then clutter our spaces, reluctant to part with anything.
If you are serious about freeing space and promoting a comfortable flow, your first( and thriftiest)action is to visit your local library.
Here are easy to follow guidelines and explanations adapted to Western life.
Authors TK Collins and Sabrina Godwin are worth reading.
Also,I have found "Feng shui for dummies"very thorough and easy to follow.
Despite decluttering by recently selling $4100 worth of vintage signs ,I still have enough other treasures to warrant opening a store.
Without lottery help that remains a fantasy!

The smallish oval shaped rug does not ground the space...a very large rectangular rug would really cozy up the room

With seating for 10, it will not feel open and spacious. You might try the rug centered on the fireplace with a nice thick pad under it and big sturdy throw pillows. Leave the rug open, no coffee table and it wil act as an area for floor lounging while watching TV.

You have a big room and too much shoved against the wall. Pic #2 looks spacious, pic #3 looks cramped. I'd focus on having a few seating clusters for conversation and reducing unnecessary stuff. I'd start with the number of dressers/chests.

I notice most of your seating is not near the windows and most of your lamps are. Are those lamps provideing necessary lighting or are they just there because you have them?

Because the the OP thought it wasn't necessary to supply complete photos of the room, this is the best I could do to assemble a plan that depicts the existing layout of the room.

This room is so far from Feng Shui, you'll have to take a cruise to reach it. How do families function in a room so lacking layout logic?

If you want some worthwhile assistance in reaching your stated goals, post images that depict all the missing walls and furnishings.

Agree with Rosiembog about accumulating things, I am now past my 70's so know how easily this can happen. One thing someone told me once for those things you treasure, keep them, but store them somewhere, then periodically switch things about, this gives your decor variety but not clutter. Thought that was a good idea!

This board is definitely not the place for any significant Feng Shui advice. You would be much better off reading books (etc.) on the subject and/or consulting with a Feng Shui expert.

From what I see of your space, the main advice I would give you, is to put a sofa table behind this floating sofa - to anchor it.

It’s a well used room with family needs so just edit and test, keeping in mind some empty space is visually calming and aim for weight and height balance. Head to Target or Marshalls and bring home/just return what doesn’t suit. I’m sure if some not needed furniture/items are also removed, you’ll like the room better. Be patient and just concentrate on one area at a time.

I think signifigant Feng Shui advice has been given regarding flow and negative space on this post. Directing the eye and traffic pattern and adding plants are the Western version of basic Feng Shui.

Additional Feng Shui information such as lucky colors, directional compass points and earth elements can be studied and incorporated but not necessary in good design.

We can only give so much help without a measured floor plan.

Thank you all for your time in helping me. looks like i have a lot to learn on flow i cleared the mantel and put the clock where suggested thank you

the little wisteria my son gave to me for mothers day card. will stay for a while. working around the beam has been a challenge. This looks better.

getting ready for a lengthy trip in a few days and now all i want to do is get back home and get busy.

    last modified: 24 days ago

Better, but sill busy/unbalanced/dated - sorry. When you get a chance, consider matching prints on either side of the beam, updating sconces, and only one larger item centered. Aim for the calm you wanted, which might mean stepping out of your comfort zone.

Great colors but odd furniture placement. The leather two seater looks like a flight simulator or a time out corner. It has no relationship to anything else in the room. Have you thought about wherelse in the room it can go? What is across from the other sofa with the round rug?

Why end tables next to the fireplace instead of next to seating?

I know how hard it is to work with no overhead lighting. Have you considered LED torchiere lights? They make great ones now that really throw off so much uplighting, have builtin dimmers, and can swiitchswitch between three different temps.

Good suggestions. Will try when i get back from trip. Thanks so much!

I also love the suggestion of wall lighting. The brass one pictured is so pretty. I saved in my photos. Thanks much!

The sconces are quite new from hobby lobby so they will be staying. I used something big as the fireplace is a large space. The boxwood can go with the cardinal (my granddaughter always played with it but now she is 16). I could give the cardinal to her but there flys the memory when i look at it.

I did a major clean out last year and kept a few lovely things. This is hard now to part with these things.

You can take photos of things you want to remember, for an example, a photo of your granddaughter with the cardinal she played with. You do not have to keep the actual item.

    A couple ideas about decluttering:

Take some colorful Post Its and put them on every item in the room. Choose bright pink color for "A, love it", other colors for "B, pretty good", "C, okay", and "D-F, it can go away". If you use bright pink for favorite objects, you will be able to quickly see what you love in the room.

A major declutter can start by pretending you are going to paint the room. Everything smaller than a basketball gets picked up and put on a table to sort through.

Very good! I love pictures and I make facebook past books for very year. No more albums. Thank you.

You have a big bookcase to hold most of your knick knacks and small photos. It sounds like they are not clutter to you. Remove the books or keep just the leather bound ones and lay them flat as pedestals. Remove all of the hobby lobby decor on top for more of your memories. At least most everything from all around the room will be contained.

You said you liked the fresher look of the cleaned up fireplace rendering with the Asian theme... this is what we mean by flow..someplace for the eye to rest easy. So start with the fireplace since that is the focal point in the room. The mantle is not exactly cleared yet.

Thank you for caring to see! I will when we get back end of July. Something fun to work on at our cabin in Wisconsin!

I took pics for those who asked for the whole room. its mainly the flow id like to fix. if i take everything out i still have no idea where to put the furniture. the room is large and confusing in itself. i can do without the large buffet undercthe window. the chest under the picture window stays for our little dog to see the neighbors.

    last modified: 23 days ago

Bring the oval rug up to the cabin. I am positive an extra large rectangular rug will help bring this space together. 11x14 or 12x15 and centered on the fireplace. You will be amazed.

The room serves its purpose to watch TV and to seat a lot of people so it's functional in that regard. The gray furniture should be centered on the fireplace but not crammed.

    laurenote thanked tracefloyd

@tracefloyd, if the furniture were centered on the fireplace, where would you place the TV?

@laurenote - Is this the main room where you watch TV and how many people are in here watching usually?

Do you want different seating areas in here for different purposes and activities or do you want all seating directed towards the TV?

I'd remove the little table in front of the window with the lamp and the console beneath the large mirror. Small edits like that will help a lot.

I usually concur with decluttering, but what is clutter to some is really meaningful to others. It seems that the objects in this room are not random decor but instead hold nice memories for you and you enjoy them on a daily basis. That is reason enough to keep them out. It is a different style than what most who post on here are fond of, but that's ok. It works for you.

You've done a nice job with the mirror and sconces and I'm glad your dog has a good look out.

Kendrah, the TV would stay in the same corner. Okay not all the furniture around the fireplace but I already suggested using the rug to lounge on to watch TV...I have done it in my house with people over.
