Isn't a fire pit for sitting around? So it needs paving all round, not to be set in a flower bed. Even if you sit further back, tending the fire will involve standing on the bed. I'd repave the whole area in the same brick. If you want plants have some containers, not a garden.

If you want flowers, just fill it with them. For this year, I'd do annuals with a plan to plant more in the fall. Some perennial salvias are pretty with dianthus. Low-growing sedums like lime zinger spread and are pretty good at suppressing weeds.

If it's reasonably shady, you could try hostas. You don't want giant ones, but hosta are tough and they smother weeds. If you go with hosta, you'll have a year or two of weeding before they fill in. But to avoid weeds and have plants, you need to fill the space, not plant a few flowers in a lot of open space.

Much better! I'd fill the whole space between the new firepit location and the hot tub with taller landscaping to create some separation and sense of enclosure for both spaces. I always thought it would be delightful to sit in a hot tub under feathery (potted!) bamboo rustling in the breeze!
