Do area rugs need to match or just coordinate?

Hi, I have a linear great room (see pic), eating area and kitchen. I’m trying to figure out if I want to put a rug under the eating area table. If I do, should the area rug for the great room and the area rug for the eating area match or just coordinate via colors?
