What is this? Garden stake?

Dear all, thanks in advance for your help!

Please see this photo. We recently repainted our house and through the process of removing the bushes of our side-yard, we found this stick which is very rusty. I tried to pull it out of the ground, but it seems to be connected to something.

Does anyone know what this is?

I did some research, and it seems to be a hook for manhole covers or drain grates. Someone is selling it on Craigslist for $15. The thing is that I can not remove it from the ground (it seems to be connected to something), but with it sticking out on the ground of our side-yard, I have some safety concerns. Any thoughts or comments? Thanks!

I agree, usually they have a corkscrew bottom. Twist, don't pull.

It looks like a dog tie out stake to me too. You can dig around it to make sure, if you are nervous about twisting it out of the ground. They do not go down in the ground all that far, so should be an easy dig.

What @cat_ky said. We had a dog tie out stake & top looked just like that. It’s a cork screw bottom so yes, you’d have to twist it out not pull. There’s a side piece on it at the top of the cork screw end with a round piece to hook the end clip end of the tie out to.

OK so if it's a dog tie out stake, what's the best way to remove the rust and get it painted to prevent future rust? Thanks!

Did you pull it out? It’s buried kind of deep since the hook part isn’t in view. Either way, I’d just shield it off & spray with Rustoleum color of your choice.

I dont see much sense in leaving it there, unless you have a dog to tie up to it. Its certainly not an attractive feature.
