I blame Lucille, and the NYT

So, I was looking for the article (a treatise, really) from a few years back in the NYT about salad. I found it and started reading it (it was from 2017! I think it was printed over 2 pages, in color, and that is why i still recalled it.

Anyway, in talking about equipment they mentioned why you need salad servers that are light weight. I noticed the other day my wooden ones are chipped at the ends, so I need new ones. I have a few serving pieces from Sabre, in a pretty, pearly turquoise resin, so I looked at those.

When I was on the Sabre site, I saw their flatware. I currently have three sets of flatware. Sterling silver for holidays and formal tables, an ivory bistro set from Laguiole for our pied a terre, and an ordinary unremarkable stainless set that I bought once when we had a big, formal party and I needed a lot of place settings.

Most of the time when I entertain at the beachhouse it is not formal enough for silver. My Laguiole would work nicely, but its not here. So I use the unremarkable day to day stainless.

But I have had a crush on tortoise flatware for a while now. I bought a set from Ballard 5 years ago, but it was seriously defective (like malformed) so I sent it back. Sabre flatware gets a good review from Food and Wine.

But the really cool thing - I can customize the color, front and back, e.g.

Isn't this cool?! Look at all the choices.

I better hurry, "no buy July is coming"

Happy to be guilty, M'am. You have exquisite taste, and I think you definitely need to make decisions before NBJ.

The pearly salad servers are pretty. Reminds me that I have a mothervof pearl caviar spoon I’ll never use again.

I rather prefer the laguiole handles; I’ve always liked them and I think they would be more comfortable to hold.

My guess is that there is now a cottage industry of making ordinary household goods Mtnrdredux-appealing by making them in various permutations of blue, white and tortoiseshell.…..in other words,, they were made for you!

I prefer the less expensive ones, and that almost never happens.! 🤣

Okay - but I want to know why are you supposed to have light weight salad servers?

Never considered the weight of serving utensils, but maybe they’ll suggest so that delicate greens don’t get bruised?

    Yes, exactly

Non-customized Sabre is available on AMZ. One reviewer bought from there first to check weight, quality, and feel.

Food and Wine gave the Sabre flatware a very good review. I had a link to it but removed it and then my post posted, go figure

    NBJ? I’m not understanding that.

I took a second look at the less expensive ones and removed my vote.

The fork tines and body and spoon bowls look unsatisfactory.

I have spent a long time in a great Montreal tableware store coddling and caressing the Sabre set over which you swoon. It is wonderful. It is one of the many things that I could afford but when it comes down to it I look at the price tag and decide to donate that money elsewhere and get some crap from TJMaxx. I will live vicariously through you should you purchase them.

And no, the Amazon ones are not nearly as amazing.

I prefer the shape of the less expensive ones. Not crazy about the boxy look/feel of the sabre ones. But I'm guessing there's a big diff in quality.

But, wait. Why NBJ? Is that a thing? I know about no buy January and have done it. But July? This could be very good timing for me. I've been spending more than I'd like. But...aren't there good sales in July? Ugh, I have a problem.
