How can we use all these rooms?

We are empty nesters and have recently renovated and added more rooms to the house. We added a new family room with the fireplace downstairs. The plan shows an expanded kitchen. We are also making the island longer. The island will have seating on one side, and at the end of the island is seating for four people (two on each side). Before the renovation we had our kitchen nook next to the island. We have a 54” round table that opens up to 10.5’ long. Now that we are making the kitchen island longer we are not sure where to place our dining room table. Do we place it in the old formal dining room or do we move it to the room next to the kitchen? If we don’t move it to the old dining room how do we arrange furniture? If we move the table in the room next to the kitchen (former family room) the table seems awkward in that space. We have no idea how to use some of these spaces. We are trying to figure out how to layout furniture, tables, chairs, etc. We love to play board games and when we are all together we like to eat around a long table. We don’t want anything formal or off limits when kids and grandkids visit. We are thinking of California casual style interiors. We want something classic and timeless. Do you have any suggestions how we can layout furniture to flow through these areas? Interior design is so foreign to me. Any suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Hard to say where to put it without knowing anything about what other furniture exists where. But, your dining room need not be a formal space. You can play games in there, have grandkids be messy in there, do whatever you like in there. So put the table in there and get some storage piece in which you can put games, incl including fun ones for grandkids.

What Kendrah said. Now it becomes about what you put in those rooms. How much can the pieces take as far as kids and wear and tear. Also you need to focus most on how you and your hubby live. This is your home base most often. Visits have much space between them. First be sure your leisure needs are met, TV/puzzle/home office/reading etc. All the spaces you created for YOU can welcome children if the furniture/rugs etc aren't fuzzy or delicate.

Congratulations on achieving "empty nestor" status! I the large round table doesn't fit the needs for the reinvented space, consider selling it. I think that center room (from kitchen view) can be a nice casual gathering space equipped with a game/puzzle table, comfortable chairs and storage console. Looking long term, if this will be your forever retirement home, perhaps consider a plan to convert the left side to a master bedroom suite on the main floor.

    Is your construction already completed?

The 15’6” x 19’6” room that is open to the kitchen would make for a great dining room/game room/library with a pass-thru butler's pantry/wet bar in between the kitchen and dining room.

But the current doorways/traffic paths through the middle of the two rooms make it awkward. If you are in the planning stages, you could relocate the doorways/traffic paths as well as the powder room in the family room (so it isn’t directly into the family room).

We are empty nesters have been for more than 30 yrs and are now downsizing but still love company. I agree the 15 x19 space is the one for dining, games and a nice big table maybe one that is the right size for a small group but can expand for all the family. Good storage there for games etc. A good plastic table cloth for the kids to do whatever .I think the room on the bottom right is aperfect spot for a nice guest room with a good quality sofa bed and a great spce for the 2 of you to watch TV and relax . It also is nice to have as as bed in pinch if one of you gets hurt or has surgery and can't handle the stairs . I do think about it now as I am in my late 70s . No need for a butlers pantry that kitxhen and DR space are great for family entertaining and for guests .

You should post a scaled drawing of your kitchen - including all dimensions for windows/walls/doors/doorways/etc.

You have a nice large space - however, the sink/dw/cooktop are all in a row right next to each other. Your dw should not be in the path between your cooktop and sink - much less located right between the two.

I believe that people here on Houzz would be able to provide you with a MUCH better functioning kitchen + help with the remainder of the first floor.

You will be spending quite a bit of money - you should end up with a functional Iayout!

Sorry, I haven’t responded 30% of my department left so I’ve been working long days and spent time with my new grand baby. Here are updated kitchen design idea and dimensions.

We plan to purchase new furniture downstairs. The only piece of furniture I still love is our cherry dining room table but I don’t think it goes with the style we are trying to create. The table without the extra leaves is 54” round, We have 3 - 2’ wide leaves we can put in to create an oval table. My husband has refinished the table once and he could restrain it again if you thought it would go with the style.

My husband was very sweet and created a sample layout for both floors of the house. Thoughts on space planning? What about light placement? It looks like too many can lights in the kitchen. We currently have two ceiling fans in our old family room area that connected to the kitchen. I think they need to go although I will miss them because it gets so hot here in the summers. If we put a dining room table in there I was thinking of removing the ceiling fan in the middle of the room and have a linear chandelier or two lantern style lights over the dining room table.

I’ve been looking at photos of Californian casual style. I still like the clean look but many are devoid of color. I would love some color in the area rugs so maybe my style isn’t 100% California casual?
