IMO the DR fixture is hung too high and only lights the ceiling why???? No textured glass and the one with blck stuff on it all wrong for your space IMHO I might go more in te academia style so a modern edge to the lighting maybe even MCM side of thet edge . I love what the vibe is in your home it lends itself to a lot of out side the box thinking and IMO you need a fabulouse chandelier in that space I mean over the top awesome so save to get that right and hung at the proper height which in your cas a bit higher than the noem

I suggest you start by lowering your chandelier above the table. The bottom of the chandelier should be 30" to 36" above the dining table.

A lantern style pendant would suit your decor nicely.

Regarding lowering the chandelier that we just had installed a few months ago, it’s as low as it can go.

Since the room has electric heaters running along the walls, I’m not comfortable with the curtains going all the way to the floor. Isn’t it a fire hazard having curtains directly touching the heaters?

So now how about over the top lights for the stairwall. Yes drapes over electric heaters are never good but do you need drpes on that large window ? IMO what ever drapes you choose need to be lux some maybe velvet an maybe in a green and I would love to see an huge pice of art on that brick wall , something that just says WOW sort of like the chandelier you can't have . Some advice from a woman married for over 60 yrs , hubby will love whart ever you do but mostly don't ask for design advice from hubby just do what you love and he will love it too.

Patricia Colwell Consulting, I’m prone to migraines, so it’s an absolute must to have curtains on EVERY window, particularly that window because it faces the South and gets tons of light. Also, the curtains are great for the nighttime; our neighbors are rather close, and our place becomes a fishbowl at night. And the curtains are velvet.

Yes yes yes. to the #1 choice I really dislike the #2 it is kind of goth and not in a good way it looks cheap too.

Now, if someone could help me with the other designs questions that have plagued me since moving in. For instance, what to do with the other side of the room? Now shown in the pictures above is my work space/fireplace area.

I hate the sconces, no clue how to decorate the mantle, I cannot do anything to the stone for budget reasons, the desk has to stay, the trunk was a wedding gift from my late uncle. I am open to replacing the rug, wall sconces and the flower pot my snake plant is in....and I could be talked into replacing the curtains.

I think in this space you need to first match the drapes from the other side . A good declutter and put back only what you need and LOVE I would lose the mirror and just remove the sconces cover with a cover and do a big piece of art there to cover those . I really dislike wall sconses almost everywhere .Your DR is perfect it shows some resraint in decor so do that same feel in this space . The trunk is too big for this space so myabe in the bedroom for blankets the desk you need the cage with the stuff in it not so much . If possible take a pic from further back so we cn see the whole room too.All that little stuff on the floor in front of the FP needs to be gone. Often if I have clients who have tons of stuff they love I suggest bringing out a couple of pieces at a time so a constant rotating of those pieces to enjoy . I am a clean freak so clutter makes me crazy but your dcor style needs some but too much is just too much

what a charming room - what if you took everything off the fireplace (both the mantle and the threshold) and see how it looks?

I would start by removing a lot of the decorative items you have around the room, it just makes the room look cluttered. You can replace the sconces and the rug for a natural fibre one. With just the one picture, it's difficult to tell what else can be done as we don't see any of the furniture except the desk and cannot really the the colours.

I suggest you keep the style of your lighting coherent with the style of your house. To give more presence to your dining room chandelier, you can add some shades.

I agree you could use more umph in your stairway lighting. I don't love anything you have posted so far though. I think black / iron is the way to go. I'd look for an actual small chandelier for the main light and then hang something small and complementary at the top of the stairs. Have you ventured down the rabbit hole of etsy and ebay?

Truthfully, I have been thinking about swapping the blue/black curtains out for more velvet burgundy curtains.

I don’t want to admit it, but you might be right about the trunk being too big for the space. Besides being a sentimental piece, it’s super useful. A lot of my tools are stored in the trunk; stuff we use quite often like screwdrivers, wrenches, hammer etc.

Maybe I should get something smaller to store my tools…...it’s just that my uncle was so excited when he gave me the trunk to use in my wedding (which he didn’t live long enough to attend).

And regarding the birdcage, it’s been moved to the dining room. I’m able to view it better over there.

I'll do some tidying over the weekend and take better pictures.
