The rug is fine as long as you can get the front legs of each chair and couch on it. The solid carpet is too dark and will show every cat hair.

Once the rug is centered on the fireplace, center the sofa on the fireplace, coffee table too. Sofa table behind sofa, yes, centered.

Your furniture feels cramped in here because it is oversized and had big arms. How many people sit in here on a regular basis? What is the largest number of people you need to seat in here and how often?

Of the chairs, I like best the wingback with slender arms because it is the least amount of look. The chair with the large roll arms is just too big for this space. The leopard chair doesn't really match, but I love that it doesn't take up much visual space.

Could you use the black iron table lamp with white shade next to the chair where you currently have the large side table, lamp and loads of plants? It would help the room have a bit more space to breathe. Any thoughts for a plant stand to the left of the fireplace that sits at window level?

I have to agree that there is too much stuff in the space and the rug works with none of it. I aslo do not always place rugs where furniture sits on the rug at all. Many of my clients have very expensive had made silk rugs and do not want them covered or damaged by furniture legs This is my LR no legs sitting on the rug not a big deal.. I would how ever suggest a huge declutter for your space . If possible the best way is to remove everything then only put back what you NEED first then live with taht for a couple of days then add a bit of the rest back and wait again . You will be suprised how much better the space feels . Regardless of that the rug needs to be returned until you have the space right then yu get a rug

I like the two chairs rather than chair and loveseat for reasons Kendra explained. I love the cat wall. But there is a lot of clutter. Can the plant stands be in another room?

A lot of good comments already. Unfortunately, I agree that the rug is not working for your furniture. You need something like the options from Beverly- warm greens, oranges, beiges - instead of white-blue-gray. I’m sorry we don’t love your rug but it really clashes with your existing furniture.

Take EVERYTHING out of the room, as Patricia suggested, and center the rug (hopefully a different one) on the fireplace. Add one thing at a time, but only the necessary pieces. The room is overwhelmingly busy with plump furniture. This exercise might help you appreciate the seating area more. I would find a way to add the smaller chair too.

As others have said the size seems ok but it may not be the best choice to go with your existing furnishings. Actually I don't think the brown sofa/loveseat coordinates well with your other sofa and chair. Might consider using it in another room if possible. Also, although I don't ever think furnishing need to be matchy-matchy the end table adjacent to the brown sofa/loveseat and your mission style coffee table don't exactly coordinate either.

I would free up some space by removing the table behind the couch. It is only holding some candles and a plant on its surface so you're not losing much there. Once it is gone you can push your couch back a foot or two and have more room in your room.

Thank you ALL! I wrote three or four paragraphs about why I have this particular furniture and why I chose blue, etc., but I keep losing my work. This is thefourth time I have lost over an hours worth of work due to this website. Before I read the newest comments, I started a Word document so I would not lose anything else. Well, guess what!! After I spilled my guts to all of you in Comments, I minimized this screen so I could share the link to my word document. I was smart, too, and copied my work in case it happened again! Yes, that would have been a genius move if I had just pasted it somewhere before I minimized the screen! Oh well...

Here is the short version:

My mom died in April 2024, and I inherited all of her furniture. It looked really good in her condo! I gave all of my living room furniture away because her stuff is in better shape than what I had. I now have her stuff, part of my old stuff, some of my husband's old stuff, and nothing matches! It's a hodge podge of stuff, and there is lots of it! I can't afford new furniture right now, so I was gonna try to at least fix up the middle floor this summer. If I accomplish that, there will be one nice space in the house where we can be comfortable and maybe even have some friends over. We haven't invited anyone to our home in a few years because we are so embarrassed about the state it's in.

I think it is also important to note that this kind of thing is not my forte (as you already know), and I think I have taste issues. Yes, I'm pretty sure I have bad taste when it comes to home decorating. I just retired as a PE teacher last month, so you can probably guess that I am not the type of person who thinks about color schemes, design, or furniture placement unless I have to.

I really don't know what to do now. I have to make my furniture work somehow, so if you have a little bit of time and you're still willing to help, I will be so greatful. I read your word doc. What the heck, try the room without the rug. You have nice floors from what I can tell. Maybe there's another room in the house that this rug works better in since you love it. I'm ot a decorator either.

Very few people (if any) will click on a link to an unknown Word doc. Just ask exactly what you want help with-no long explanations needed-and there are a lot of people who give their time and will try to help you. As an example, read the comments about the rug color and say if you still want to use it or are willing to look for something else.

A few other thoughts-your kitties are very lucky to have you with that kitty wall and unless there is something you are not showing, I see no reason why you wouldn't have friends over. Just streamline some of the accessories, plants etc.

And you don't need therapy.

* I centered the rug, removed the tall plant table and replaced with plant stand, removed the sofa table, removed the oversized chair, replaced chair with loveseat.

* I am removing the rug next.

* Is it not necessary to have some blue in the living room (rug) when I have this blue kitchen island?

I think it could work. It's quite light, but that could just be different lighting in the two photos that are here combined.

I would actually place the two chairs at right angles to the sofa, with the one that matches the sofa on the cat side of the room (just couldn't do that for this illustration). With chair instead of loveseat, there might be room for the small slipper chair at an angle near the cat-side window. (Like that you centered everything on the fireplace, by the way.)

Seeing the bright blue island explains the original rug. Any thought of changing that color, maybe to a grayer blue?

I like the 2nd to the last rug the best. And the last one the 2nd best.

Hi Jana, just been lurking here and had a thought. Yea the rug you have doesn’t really fit, color wise sorry :), the rug with some green or a rug with some blue could be nice. Which ever rug you end up using perhaps slip cover one of the chairs in a shade from the rug, or both? Then I would keep sofa table out and rid of one or both plant stands and have the table lamp in front of a window beside one of the chairs. How many seats you need on a regular basis? Love seat could go if you don’t need it?

Of the rugs you posted, I like the last two the best because they appear to have some blue in them. Does the description include blue? IMO Beverly's rug has too much gold. I like how simplynatural added some blue pillows to tie into the rug.

Here are a few other rugs, just to evaluate color/style relationships with the sofas/chairs. I paid no attention to price, and most ignore the bright blue of the island. Looking for something that compliments the seating pieces.

Quiet harmony with the furniture colors (less contrast in the rug might make the seating area feel larger?)

The seating pieces are warm, welcoming, and comfortable. They relate well to warmer, more subdued colors, not so much to cool, intense brights and pure whites. To my eyes, style matters less than color here.

late here but I thought that the whole design world was all up in arms saying that furniture legs At least the front has to be on the rug? that bigger always better?

Thanks to all of you who posted the latest comments! I'm so glad I am seeing what all of you have been talking about. That rug did not work at all! So, I had already purchased a rug before I read the newest posts (Pic #1). When I read that @enajasereht liked the 2nd to last rug the best, I found it and bought it, because that was truly my favorite too! @simplynatural, I love those rugs that you picked out! They are a bit out of my price range, but I totally get your vision! Thanks so much.

@Alice, I agree with everything you said, and I'm going to do all of it, except, I don't know what I will do with babies (plants). I was actually thinking about reupholstering a chair (or more), but good slip covers would do the trick...at least for now.

Just to let everyone know, I am going with the next size rug. I think a 9 x 12 will be better, don't you?? Here is the rug I had purchased a couple days ago, and the second to last picture above is the rug that I just purchased. I really like bothe of them a lot! I would like to know which one you all like better because I can still send one of them back. I feel so much better now. Thanks to all!

I know this isn’t helpful but I do like both rugs you like! I probably lean towards the blue one because it will anchor the space and
add some depth since your furniture is lighter. And yes, 9’x12’ sounds right.

Does "second to last picture above" refer to your featured answer comment? Are these the two options?

If so, while I like them both, I would probably pick the first one and use the loveseat to echo the green.

Jana even if you could combine the plants to one side vs at both windows? I would combine if possible to the corner window. Go vertical higher with a taller stand unless the kitties have a problem with that. We have many rescue cats here and understand that completely.

@justcallmepool nailed it. That darker rug is really pretty and “anchors” the furniture.
