Should I stick to the same shade of wood as seen for carpeted rooms? r

Hello,

we just bought this house and want to swap the carpet in the dining room and living room with hardwood. For the life of me i can't decide if its ok to get a different ( darker) color for those two rooms? I am not a fan of the current oakwood shade and have always had walnut or espresso wood flooring. Can i change the shade for thosw two rooms that we are spending money on anyway? We cannot afford to do the entire new floor of the rest of the house. But the current foyer and kitchen can literally be seen from living room and dining room, so shouldn't i just stick with the current oakwood color even though I dont like it :(

Refinishing cannot be done on the current floor either.

I agree with waiting. Your home appears well maintained and you will be able to live there comfortably for now.

Yes I would stay with same color.
If you don’t like the color than just stick
With carpet. I really don’t know the rules just that it’s more appealing to have same hardwoods

The wood flooring throughout the 1st floor should be the same.

That can be accomplished with either matching the wood you have and finishing it all the same stain or replacing it with engineered wood or laminate.

Save your money and do it right just once. Personally, I would not want the sanding mess in my house. I'd select something prefinished and install it.

The current stain/finish is too light IMO. Here are how other finishes might appear.

The first floor should all be one color. I'd wait until you can afford to do the entire floor in the color you like. It will not look good in two colors. You will regret it. And, you'll also regret spending money on a floor that you don't like.

Not everything can happen all at once when you buy a new house. I'd wait.

It's better to do the floors before you move in. Otherwise, you have to move all your furniture later. But if you can't afford to do the whole first floor right now, can you at least buy the flooring material for all of it and just have the living and dining rooms installed right now? Two different colors is going to look bad. Maybe you can install the rest in a year? If you buy a pre-finished product you can't rely on the same thing still being available even a year from now.

If there is no budget to do it correctly right now, then consider just having the carpet professionally cleaned and live with it until you can save up for all new wood, or engineered wood, floors.

So you looked into a refinsih for the existing floor or are you just assuming it can't be done. I agree that all the wood should be the same so maybe just wait until that can happen

"If you buy a pre-finished product you can't rely on the same thing still being available even a year from now. " If it's a natural finish you can. Plus if it's a water based finish, you're likely to have very minimal color change. Exceptions are Walnut, Cherry and oodles of exotics.

Have you peeled up the carpet? Perhaps the wood floor continues underneath.
