Wall Decor Ideas for a Coastal Bedroom

I’m trying to decide on the best way to decorate the wall above the beds in our coastal home. I’d love to incorporate a subtle nautical touch to complement the space.

I have two long rustic wooden oars that I was considering hanging above the beds( I don’t have a picture). Another idea is to install a sconce light above each headboard (style in pics) with a framed print or ship wheel centered between them.

I’m open to suggestions and would really appreciate any ideas you might have!

Thank you!

What struck me in your photo is the vertical bars against the board and batten walls. That's too much verticality for me. Would prefer to see sold headboard instead that would add some solidity and break up all the vertical lines.

I'd add local art, perhaps watercolor landscapes-similar, but not identical since you've got a lot of symmetry already. I'm not a fan of single wall accents so I'd opt for removal of the applied thin molding, but if that's not possible, then cover it with art and a beefy bedside table (something with drawers) and an interesting lamp.

I live by the coast and use photos that I've taken to decorate some walls. I have them enlarged through CVS photo in their website. It's easy and inexpensive.

The eds are not inviting looking at all and honestly you live at the coast . as mentioned take pics and frame them. I would never like a heay oar hanging over my head . The light is usless to read by BTW You could just have a foam padded headboard cover made for the beds and maybe a pillow in yellow for a bit of punch too. You even could do something like this for the headboards

Why go to the expense of changing the headboards?
You can easily sew a cloth cover to slip over...try a nautical themed print (avoiding vertical stripes) or a simple canvas slip cover in your choice of a solid color.
Even easier...drape a blanket or coverlet over the headboards, to at least try out various looks.
For wall decor,I would consider any lightweight eye pleasing item...placed over each bed...initials,a rope wreath, etc.
Do check the web for likely items.

Is this a guest or kid’s room and what is the dresser/other furniture like?

    Guest room:

Kid’s room: Lights over bed and oars vertically in middle….or over each bed with light in middle.

I’d choose decor/lighting choices based on rest of room and just hold up to get the effect. I’d actually start by changing the rug for a more casual look.

I like the headboards and the idea with the oars. But of course the size and color of the oars are important (can be painted if necessary), I would probably not move the headboards too close to the wall, so that there is no feeling that the oars are hanging over your head. You can also attach a thick rope horizontally to the wall, with a little sag...

There are so many great coastal decor ideas out there...
The white behind the headboard pillows are huge extra pillows for comfort and visual enhancement.

And also, if the beds are not close to the wall, you can make a shelf along the entire length of the wall at about the height of the bed (above the socket). It is convenient to throw pillows on it behind the headboards when changing bed linen or for sleep mode, and use the part between the beds as a bedside table.

The color of the shelf can be different: black, white, blue, wood - it depends on the decor you choose.

I like the beds, but, I dont think, the beds and the walls go very well together. It makes me think, of a jail with bars for some reason. I would remove the strips on the wall, and patch any nail holes, and then prime where patched and repaint that wall. Even with art work over the beds, it still doesnt look like a very friendly place to be.

Your room already has a clean, fresh coastal vibe with the board and batten wall, black metal bed frames, and blue-and-white bedding.

Yes for focal point — a centered piece between the beds adds strong visual interest.

Mount the oars horizontally, slightly above the headboards. You could angle them slightly for visual interest (like a subtle “X” shape) or keep them straight and parallel.

The room requires a nightstand between the beds and individual lights IMO.

LOVE @Patricia Colwell Consulting headboard cushion proposal! Because my parents have that style of headboard in their guest room and it is NOT comfortable. Consider making cushions like the one her picture that attaches to the top rail of the headboards.

I think it's going to be a really cute room when finished!

I would add a nightstand between the beds.

Also, if you add a Euro sized pillow directly in front of the metal headboard, it will cover up quite a bit of the vertical black lines showing on the head board. I think once you do that + add elements like shown in various comments above (photos/art/oars/sconces/etc.), the "double lines" effect of the slats on the wall + headboard won't look so pronounced.

If you add the horizontal oars as shown in Celery's first image, the vertical slats on your accent wall will be interrupted a bit (along with the sconce + circular ships wheel). I think the room looks nice in the visualization that Celery created for you.

It would have been better if you would have left the wall blank OR added horizontal shiplap instead of the vertical slats. However, at this point, I'd leave the wall and finish the room before spending all that time (Or $$ if you hire someone) to remove all the slats + fix all the holes + paint the wall again.

I do hope that you didn't listen to some of the bloggers/youtube people out there who tell people to use adhesive to install the wood slats - if you did use adhesive, I wouldn't even think about removing the wood slats because your drywall will be destroyed!) At some point (several years from now), you will probably decide to redo this room -and if you used adhesive, you will probably need to put a 1/4" piece of drywall over your current drywall (will be much easier than trying to patch the mess after removing the slats).

One more thing - I do think a sisal or jute rug would look cute in the room - but I really can't see much of the rug that you already have - and I wouldn't spend money on replacing it if it's new or in good shape. I also think your current ceiling fan is fine - but I'm not a fan of many of the more modern ceiling fans - especially black ones against a white ceiling).

Please post some photos when it's finished!!

Have always liked more of a subtle costal theme
