Thinking of doing a moody office, will i regret it?

Getting ready to remodel our office, I really want to do a moody office since the rest of our house is white/light colors. I've told family and everyone seems to be trying to talk me out of it, saying the room will be too dark and depressing. The dining room is straight to the right off the entry and is a light taupe-y color, straight ahead the living is white, the kitchen will be white with natural wood. I don't think one small room being dark is a big deal. Attached are pictures of when you first step into the house - the dining room on the right, and the office on the left, with the living room straight ahead, and my inspiration picture. Still in the process of buying furniture and rugs, don't judge us!

Your room will not be dark and depressing if well lit. I don't see an overhead receptical in here. Are you willing to add one? Get overhead lighting, good desk lighting, and a picture light to go over the middle section of the bookcases. Also show us a pic of the windows - what direction do they face? Do you work from home and what times of day will you be in here?

Your inspo pic has good natural lighting, overhead, and also has a light in the middle of the shelves. It is also probably massively overexposed and contributing to it feeling like like a light space. Look at some more pics of rooms like this that are not overexposed and see if you'll like them.

What dark color are you thinking of using? I'd do a blue black or green black instead of a straight up black.

How do you respond to these rooms? I don't like a white ceiling in a small dark space. I say go big or don't do it! Thoughts?

If someone is going to WFH all day in the room that person should decide what color they want the walls to be. Everyone does not like the same thing. As far as how it looks with the rest of the house, why don't you add French doors so there's more of a separation? That may also help the person working there get more work done. Have you been thinking about a whole house color scheme? If this room is a color that is not found anywhere else in your home it will not work as well as if there is some relationship to the other spaces.

Thinking either the color in the inspo pick or Farrow and Ball’s Railings which is the color of our fireplace. There will be 2 sconces above the book cases, a floor lamp in the corner most likely, and a light on the desk. There are 2 windows side by side on the wall on the left that face West. i have an office at my work, so will just be used to store my office stuff at home, and work from home there when needed.

Love railings. Sounds like this color will relate to other areas in the house. But I love a cozy den office and don't think it needs to anyway.

What sconces are you using for the book case? Are they bright integrated LED sconces that will throw light up and out or will they just poor a downward light to illuminate the bookcase? If they are not bright LED sconces, I don't think you have enough light to make this room look appealing. I'm all for dark, but not dark and poorly lit. You need enough over all ambient light and it doesn't sound like you will have it.

I think it comes down to how the room is furnished/accessorized/its natural light and if you want a connection to adjoining spaces.

The living room is BM white dove, the dining room is BM Revere Pewter at 75% strength, any ideas on a paint color for the office if it's not a good idea to go dark?

As suggested by @kandrewspa, if you install french doors you won't see that much of the dark room and you can paint it as dark as you like.

Down pipe (Farrow and Ball) is often a nice alternative when you don't want to go quite as dark as railings. It has a bit more blue in it. Here's an example of a home office in down pipe. I'd get a samplize swatch and try it in different places around the room as it looks different in different light.

It will echo nicely the black chairs in your dining room as well as your fireplace. I love the style of your home!

Down pipe office - brass adds a nice touch of brightness. You could paint the back of the bookcase and shelves a lighter color too.

I like that color a lot. I actually do already have brass accents with the cabinet handles and lights above the shelves. Dining room chairs aren’t permanent haha, just not in the budget to buy chairs, buffet table, rugs, etc.

french doors on the office is in phase II of the house renovation!

I tihnk if the lighting is really good for actual work why not do it for you. Adds a bit of drama since it is at the front of the house too.

You can go with one feature wall as well

    Go for it!

I would choose a color similar to your furnishings, for a great color drench.

I have a drenched room that is SW Virtual Taupe, all my built ins are oak, and the upholstered furniture is a beige/Taupe. The area rug is the only thing with a color pattern, on a light floor.

I used leather pulls on the cabinets, and matchstick blinds on the windows.

Think it through, keep the contrasts to a minimum for a small space.

Walls, ceiling and trims all the same color choice.

I agree--go dark! Why are so many people afraid of dark colors? It will be a beautiful contrast to your other rooms.

Hopefully the renderings of the dark color just as an accent wall will convince you to paint the entire room dark!

Hi, I think it's a great idea and you should go for it. Go bold. I suggest going with plum, cobalt blue, teal as one of the central colors for the walls. If you go with plum, you can accent it with grey, a deep blue, or go lighter with accents such as mauve, a dusty rose. If you go with cobalt blue you could go with grey or navy blue accents.

To make a moody office not feel flat and just “dark” notice the interesting walls in each of these. Paneling is added and/or bookshelves from floor to ceiling. The desk is wood in all of these - the color is dark but it works.
