FL Home: Vytex Potomac Coastal vs. PGT Winguard

last month

I am replacing my original windows with impact and have narrowed my choices to Vytex Potomac Coastal and PGT Winguard. Vytex is 5 double hung windows and PGT is 3 double hung and 2 single hung. Both are around $10,000. I'm more concerned about the difference in quality between the two brands and looking for insight and/or personal experience with either of them. Thank you.

    Either of them impact rated?

@Windows on Washington Ltd Yes, both windows are impact rated. Do you have any insight on the quality (and/or warranty) for either of the brands? Thank you.

It might be very difficult to get any reviews or comparisons of the Vytex Coastal impact window since it was introduced to the public less than a month ago, while the PGT WIngard has been more or less the impact window market standard bearer for decades.

Looking over the specs for the Vytex Coastal, there is a lot to like in the design but the 55DP is on the low side when compared with many other products on the market. This is not a concern per impact performance though, since impact performance and design pressure are independent of one another.

As a company, Vytex has a very good quality reputation, and there are no deep dark secrets concerning building an impact window, just a matter of doing it right. On the other hand, while PGT has had an up and down reputation for many years, most large companies, especially those that dominate a specific market, seem to have up and down reputations when looking at the long term. It's pretty common.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are more Wingard windows being installed in Florida than almost all other brands combined... which again might not be a measure of quality, but it does suggest that the window is at the very least more than adequate for the application.

Yes, PGT/Wingard are installed all over my area of FL, from basic mass produced spec homes to custom waterfront homes.

We built a custom home in 2021 and wanted a higher end window for a house we planned to live in for 20+ years. We went with Marvin impact windows.

@oberon476 Thank you very much for the detailed answer, I appreciate your insight! PGT certainly has a presence in FL and most of the quotes I received uses their Winguard line. Being a larger company, I understand they tend to have more variety in reviews but their lack of accountability when it comes to honoring their warranties is concerning. I know there's a chance Vytex could also be lacking in that department so it's hard to make a decision when there's more information on one brand vs the other.

Can't sum it up any better than @oberon476 just did.

My only experience has been in the Vytex line up (at least the last 10 years) and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them based on those experiences.

Windows on Washington recommendation is more than enough for me.

Great people and company, and Eric is top-notch and well respected for his knowledge and integrity.
