helping creeping liriope to creep

last month

i posted about this before & the consensus was being close to my magnolia tree could hinder it's spread due to a lack of water. i placed a soaker hose thru the center of the main mass & it has helped. i'd like to move some hoping to eventually cover an 8'x12'x8' triangular patch. if i remove plugs from the center mass would that hurt the main mass? i could use a bulb plug planter or maybe just remove some plugs with a sharpshooter shovel. the ground is clay so i'd mix in some compost or composted manure. i've quit using composted leaf mold from local parks cuz there are too many unknown roots & seeds in it. i know that's where i got an infestation of nut sedge & false nettle. in the st louis city mulch piles a lot of residents ignore the compost only signs & throw all sorts of trash into the bins & the workers are not inclined to sort out the trash.
