Where to put couch and other furniture suggestions?

last modified: 2 months ago

I'm renovating this small downstairs area and want to put a small couch somewhere and coffee table. The only place that would kind of work is against the wall. A 6-foot couch would be the largest that could fit along that wall before it's too close to the sink area. I'm trying to make the area look cozy, like a small area to read or just relax because there isn't really a good place to put a TV either. Any ideas welcome on how you would design this small space. Thanks in advance!

Draw a scale floorplan using a sheet of graph paper or use a ruler with looks of measurements. The space has 5 doors and entrances. It's only going to get minimally cozy. Doors that open into the space opposite the kitchenette can be easily remounted to swing the other way. Maybe swap them side to side to get the swing into the other rooms the handedness you may want. With the two doors not opening into the wall, a large tv can go there. And it'll help to keep the doors closed. A deep seat couch, like 43" or more can go across the room in front of the tv with a large ottoman as a coffee table and for lounging. It'll work for comfort and snacking for small things made at the kitchen. A 4K tv even 85" now only needs 5-6 feet of separation.

Who will be using this space and when. Is this in a larger home or the main area of a small space? How many people will be using it?

Was this space originally intended as a mud room/ laundry room? I notice the garage is directly off this space.

    Cute space, use the kitchenette in the scheme. Something on this idea? Small sofa, table and a couple of chairs? You have to do the floor plan {:}

Or, float a sofa with back to kitchenette. If you did that could a t v be hung on a swing arm?

Do you plan on having two people sit on this loveseat?

Maybe consider two lounge chairs for the area instead. It's a more comfortable seating arrangement.

Draw and measure please? Note every wall, opening dimension?

You've a kitchenette.....there will be snacks? Who is using it? You and a friend? You alone?

More context to your question would yield better answers and that begins with a measured DRAWING

What is this space for and didn't you have some sort of plan before you started construction?

Shoehorning a couch into this space is going to look really odd. Look into a loveseat or even two chairs. If you got chairs, they wouldn’t have to set up against the wall.

You haven’t said what this space is intended to be. Is that the only kitchen in the residence? Do you need eating space? Is this an apartment? Or maybe that’s a wet bar?

With only a very large sink in the space, but no fridge or oven etc, is it really a kitchenette?

Judging by the size of the sink and the location of this room, and no visible windows, it appears to be meant for use as a laundry/mud room, not coducive to a sitting area, especially with all those doors.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I don't have experience drawing to scale, but I tried to make a drawing that has the measurements. The area that I'm redoing used to be part of the garage, so the rooms were already there, but just opened directly into the garage. We just put up the wall to separate where the car is parked so that we can use the enclosed space. The sink area was already there, so instead of removing it completely, we just put in new cabinets there and kept the original sink. It really isn't ideal because it's just a sink (and we put in a microwave cabinet above) with no stove or refrigerator. I decided not to put in a stove because it's such a small area with no ventilation (no windows other than in the bedroom, bathroom and laundry). We did consider putting in a refrigerator, possibly on the wall opposite the sink (near the laundry room), but I'm not sure I like a refrigerator all the way on that side. I figured we can just go upstairs to the main kitchen for now until we figure things out. This is part of our main family house (4 people), so upstairs is our main kitchen, living room, etc. This room will just be used to lounge in (if we can figure out how to make that work) and mainly just another small space to hang out.

This, I assume is where you enter from garage with groceries for the upstairs kitchen? Is this SOCAL? by any chance?

A waste of money.......Lets see the bedroom on this level, and who sleeps down here, please? Is it guest only and a few pics of the REAL living floor: ) up the stairs?

The most you will squeeze in here is a single chair and ottoman. Grab one from up the stair and try it . In the meantime.....post pics upstairs.

Note the door swings on your drawing as well

I’m with Patricia. Why would anyone hang out in this space? Do you need to stop and rest after parking your car before you go upstairs?

Attractive mudroom features would be great. You could incorporate a sit-down place for putting on shoes or boots.

Do you have kids? If so I would fully make this a hang out space for them. Cozy couch, tv on wall with very little else on the wall to save space. A small table with chairs somewhere for games. Teens would love this space and wouldn’t care at all about where it was located.

I would also change it swing of the doors for laundry and garage so that you can use that corner area for Tue tv. The sofa could be modular so it can be moved and rearranged as needed. Just hanging out it goes against long wall. Want to play videos games or watch tv pieces can be moved to look toward where tv is. You need furniture that will he versatile for the space. It’s awkward for sure but again, depending on who uses it could still be awesome.

what about a small couch with it's back to the kitchen wall and a tv on the opposite the kitchen wall. then maybe a small table on the back of the couch with 2 chairs. oops, I see judy graham suggest that layout with the couch with it's back to the kitchen wall.

I like the pantry/mudroom ideas, but I understand wanting another place to hang out. I would add the microwave and a mini-fridge. Then you could add two small scale recliner chairs and a tv on a rolling stand. You could buy a "baker's rack fridge stand" similar to this, but in white.
