Cool! I’m glad to hear ot was fun, rob.

Back in the late 1960s, I had a siphon coffee maker. I cannot recall the brand now. It consisted of two good-sized clear glass globes, one atop the other, with a cloth filter in between. IIRC the heat source was something like a small butane burner. Needless to say it was fragile with a somewhat precarious topheavy? architecture.

The coffe was smooth and without any grounds. Water came to a boil in the lower globe and IIRC rose as steam to the upper globe where it condensed and fell onto the grounds. At the end of the cycle, the burner was turned off and the resulting coffee passed through the cloth filter into the lower globe, which was now empty of the original water.

I believe I broke and replaced one of the globes. “Good coffee” but in those days I did not understand about the value of freshly roaster and ground beans. I probably used vacuum-canned ground coffee (which was better in those days than it seems to be now).

ETA It looked a lot like this one,but wasn’t a Yama.

I just remembered! I’ve got a very similar Bodum model in a cubbyhole.

I probably should clear things out — I must have about 6 to 8 coffee makers of various types and I only use the Melitta compact pour-over. My house is a veritable eBay warehouse, but I don’t know how to run eBay or Etsy.

Exactly! I rather remember Gale from Breaking Bad, using a similar implement, though his was actually custom-made. This is all just for fun

If you seach ”siphon coffee maker” on YouTube, there are several shorts which show this exact siphon in action, which is a little different to the video posted.

I had the best coffee ever from a syphon bar in Taiwan. So I know those things can make amazing coffee.

As I understand it, you want to get the coffee decanted into another container as soon as it is brewed, as the syphon can quickly overheat the coffee.

It was such a hit! I bought it for my daughter's boyfriend who despises grounds in his coffee, but also for the visual spectacle. After the birthday party crew left today, I pulled out the box so we could examine it. A reward after all the hard work we did today, getting ready for the birthday party. The kids were mesmerized by it and have made two cups of coffee after running it with water to clear it out a few times. And we stopped what we're doing every single time to go watch it rise and fall, siphoning. It is really smooth coffee. It is also incredibly entertaining 😀
