What is this part of the door called and should we paint it??

last month

It feels like a piece of metal and I see on many houses it is whatever material their exterior is. to avoid calling a stucco guy should we just paint it the color of the stucco? Black? What do people who know design do?

It is essentially a threshold allowing the door to clear, the "floor" in front .

You are not showing YOUR entrance. It matters not what it is called, it matters that you want to know what color yours should be? So you show YOURS

Thanks for your reply and I may be misunderstanding but this is my entrance. We will have bronze door hardware installed, get a larger door mat and change the house numbers to bronze also. So my question is do people paint that any sort of color to match decor or do they just keep it structural? I know you can do whatever you want but trying to make decisions based on good design choices.

And by bronze I mean ”oil rubbed bronze” so essentially black

On our stucco house the threshold is black which kind of blends into our oil rubbed bronze door and sidelights. Also the trim around the door is the same color as the door.

I went back and forth with painting the frame or staining it but liked the look of the white frame as our windows are also framed. But now that bottom part being white makes it feel like the door is a window to me. @Kendrah is right- probably test a small part with the stucco color. Thanks!

    I vote black.

Only seeing your door, and not full exterior?

Why the white at all? Why orb? Maybe a bit of brass?

    Show the whole front?

The entire white trim around the door isn't a good match for the off-white stucco. Why just change the bottom, which no one is going to notice anyway. Paint all the trim cream.

Here’s a photo of the whole house. I just used the photo app to color the numbers and door handles

I'd have done black door... wider casing here: )

Unfortunately those doors were about as small as a double door could get without it looking odd or being custom ($15K vs $8K), so doing wider trim wasnt an option and this is not our forever home so removing stucco (molding above the door) and adding to the sides is more than we wanted to do.

I thought about the black door! It is so pretty! Maybe one day. I just love a wood door. And trying to add some color to go with the brick felt right. The frame around the door is my dilemma- should have probably kept it wood with stain but eh - cant go back now! haha

it's the threshold & it looks like it's aluminum which is typically left bare. leave it bare. painting it will create a constant maintenance issue as the paint will get scuffed from being stepped on. I'm a carpenter & have installed a couple hundred of these over the years & never painted them, look around your neighborhood I doubt you'll find any that are painted. if any do have color they were anodized at the factory.

It does look like an aluminum threshold and probably could have been ordered in ORB. You might inquire if it's replaceable after install or if it's integrated into the door frame at the factory. If you want to change it, there is paint made specifically for outdoor aluminum that would probably hold up reasonably well. Especially if you put a couple of coats of clear top coat on it. Does your front door get used by family and or pets? Most people don't use that entrance except for guests, so it might not be any kind of a wear concern. You could match the door trim to it, but I would just paint the trim the same color as the door (orb would be very close anyway) which would make the door look a tiny bit larger. If you want to see what a dark threshold would look like, just drape it with a dark cloth or dark construction paper, or even a black garbage bag to get a visual.

    Your home is beautiful!

If that is the aluminum threshold it cannot effectively be painted. Painting it will look awful in short order as walking over will cause the paint to wear of quickly. Should have thought it out more and ordered it a different color (black, bronze and beige being the most common other colors available).

When you get tired of the double door (and you will quickly) go back to a single door with sidelites. Double doors without a substantial overhang or protection are inherent leakers.

Take off those silly shutters while you are at it , paint the trim around the door the same as the door and if you cannot exchange the theshold then paint it the same too and be prepared to repaint often
