Puffed and popped favorites?

last month

What kind of popped kernels or seeds, besides popcorn, do you like?

My current favorite is puffed waterlily seeds. Those have to be seasoned, however. It's the size and crunch they bring.

Puffed quinoa is another favorite, though one must watch that they don't get damp and lose their crunch. They do have a lovely toasty flavor.

Popped sorghum is nice, though usually made in sweetened flavors. I find popcorn more satisfying.

What do you like?

There are a number of brands of puffed water lily seeds, but the ones I get here, Asha Pops, are indeed from California. I just saw a TV chef from India, whence they originated, call them "fox nuts". They do ship: https://ashapops.com/products/

And here I was thinking this was going to be about breakfast cereals 😄

Just popcorn here - I really don't buy a lot a snack foods, other than potato chips and pretzels.

I also like these crispy wonton strips, sold as a salad topping.

I can't say I have any favourites because I don't eat any popped or puffed snacks. I'm engaged in a permanent battle to keep my weight in check and I can't afford to eat anything outside regular meals. I'm not over weight but I could very easily be. So, sadly, 'snack' can't be in my vocabulary.

Can’t think of anything other than popcorn and Cheeto Puffs, but both are rare for me.

We in Australia and in the UK have this product called pork cracklings which are like puffed small pieces of roast pork rind. Definitely something to have very occasionally, although they are not as fatty or unhealthy as they sound- natural protein.

We have them here, too, but they're called chicharrones (which word can either be fried pork rinds or fried pork belly (burnt ends), but as you say, the former is more nutritionally defensible, though now I have a craving for the latter).

Warning: The puffed water lily seeds are expensive. I find them immensely satisfying, however. Most of them crunch like popcorn, but they're lighter and taste more substantial at the same time, and they're mostly air with a little salt. A whole bag (though a quarter (a large handful) is a satisfying portion, and just a few is a nice little crunch break) is like eating a simple, medium sized cookie in terms of food value, and much more fun. Be aware, though, that once opened, any humidity will get to them, and they'll stop being crunchy fairly quickly, even sealed up in their bag.

I've tried them all. My favorite is the chili, natch. It's just a bit spicy, not flaming hot. I also really like the turmeric. The others are good, but I prefer the stronger flavors.

There are other brands as well. I think they a common treat in India.
