Just moved, advice on living room furniture?

We just moved into a new rental home and almost all of our furniture doesn't fit. The living room and dining area are next to each other with high ceilings. I love the openness but it feels a bit like a cave at night and I need to add some coziness and fill the space up a bit. I'm still in the process of buying new furniture and carpets to fill the space.
I'm torn between getting another couch/ chairs for the living room or just getting a sectional and if I did this would the TV go where it is or in the corner of the room near the window. I'm also wondering what to do with the giant empty wall in the middle of the room to make it less cavernous. Bookshelf? Floating shelves? Thank you!

Lucky you, a new home and high ceilings!

For me, adding a sectional will make it feel more like a cave, no interest, just a tall room with a large piece of furniture in the middle.

Two sofas if you need that much laying around furniture. Comfortable swivel chairs would be a better option.

Bring the dining space closer to the kitchen. Add a tall hutch type piece on the dining side for useful storage. Use the flooring/carpet line to divide the space with a long sofa and backed with a console table (for dining use and definition to living space. Mount the TV on the wall and get a long slim credenza

I would get a longer dining room table and possible run it the other direction. I can’t tell how big that space is. I’m team sectional but your sofa looks lovely and you could easily add to it with their pieces. The tv unit needs to be longer so it looks more proportional. Can you show another pick of what’s behind the sofa? Is that the entry?

Your table should be centered on the siding door and under the overhead lights.

Add some LARGE art to the walls

Place some large plants around the space.

You might try filling the space with a buffet and artwork in the dining area and then looking at keeping the TV where it is, but adding more/different furniture. You could do a sofa with two swivel chairs, a sectional, or a small sectional with one accent chair.

You just moved in! Do nothing till you have lived there for at least a month; longer if you can stand it. That will tell you what you are missing, and where you are missing it. Be guided by your need for function. The form will follow that. (Thanks to Louis S. Sullivan and all whose similar advice came before his.)
