I thought I saw a mascara discussion recently

last month

Does anyone remember what I am thinking of? I wanted to refer back to it and cannot find it.

Thanks for looking. The OP may have taken it down, but I was thinking it might have been a rabbit trail in a thread that started about something else.

I rarely wear mascara due to sensitive eyes and the fact that we were getting ready to go somewhere and when I went to put mascara on, I found my lower lashes were somewhere between something I didn't want to accentuate and nearly non-existent. I tried an eye balm and that and/or time brought my lashes back. So now I want to see if I can wear mascara for those few times I would like to. I bought a couple to try -- They were a bit thick and seemed like they might be a bit dry (tubular mascara should not clump adn flake). I remembered someone saying there was something you could add and I wanted to check that out. I found online that a drop or two of saline solution might do the trick and be safer than water but what I am remembering was a chemical. Perhaps someone will remember what that was.

    Thanks for looking.

Lancôme Lash Idole is a good one. Doesn’t clump, flake, or run (no raccoon eyes). It provides decent volume and length, and the tube lasts without becoming dry or gloppy (I toss out mascara at around 3-4 months).

It was Kswl that had the ingredient she adds!

You're right too about it being an old post that someone brought to life again.

I never put mascara on my lower lashes to avoid smudging.

I have tried many, but I always come back to good ol Maybelline in the pink container. It isn’t gloopy, doesn’t smudge, comes off easily when I wash my face, and it’s cheap!

TLDR, I purchased some mascara sample packs from Ulta and loved being to try different brands without a huge investment. I think Sephora offers sample packs occasionally as well.

I struggle with mascara because my eyes are sensitive and I wear a heavy eye cream that seems to make almost every mascara end up on my cheeks. A month or so ago, Target/Ulta was selling mascara sample size packs, all different kinds, about five per package, heavily discounted. I'm still working my way through the pile but so far the Fenty Beauty one is working for me. It's a little clumpy but not terribly so, lasts longer than most and doesn't hurt my eyes, which is my main consideration.

Dee, the sample packs sound like a great idea. I would love to find something like that - especially if they had one especially for sensitive eyes. Too much to ask for? I have a couple of FWP mini tubes I have kept to try someday as well as two that I bought.

One is a Clinique tubing mascara. I wanted to try a tubing variety I read they encase the lash and don't flake or smudge and are easy to remove, so good for sensitive eyes. I had a reward to use or lose at Macy's and I used to only wear Clinique eye shadows, so that seemed worth a try. It did clump and flake badly, so not sure it was a good tube, but will give it a second try before tossing.

The other in No7 - a serum and mascara combo that is supposed to be good for mature lashes. I thought that one might be good since one of the reasons I stopped wearing mascara except for special occasions was that I tended to loose a lot of eyelashes whenever I did wear it - a serum sounded like it would combat that.

All I really want is a bit of added color and definition that still looks pretty natural. I don't want the falsies look.

Sueb20, I wasn't sure if it was a pink or a green tube Maybelline that has been a cult classic for many years. Thanks for confirming it is the pink one. I should probably try that one too.

All of this to find something I may wear once or twice before I should replace it.

Regarding Maybelline Great Lash (there are other forms this is the original I think) - I use the washable (no makeup remover required). It's easy to get the wrong one.

I use the washable Maybelline too like Sueb. No makeup remover required. It's easy to get the wrong one, if you want to try it.

Guess I can wear ANY mascara. I've tried Dollar Tree, $1.25 each! They sell water based mascara OR oil based water proof. I have several of each...wear water proof mascara to the gym...sit in a sauna or go swimming with it on.

I've been wearing L'Oreal double tubing mascara for years. It has a basecoat on one side and then the tubing mascara on the other. It's inexpensive and easy to find. The down side is that it only comes in 2 shades: black and blackest black.

I've never had good luck with mascaras. On a whim, right before a trip last summer when I had run out of my last one, I bought Elf's Lash Xtndr at Ulta. Highly recommend. Turns out, it's a tubing mascara, and I had never understood what that was before. It's heads and tails better than any mascara I've tried in the past.

I loved Shu Uemura mascara until they changed the formula. The original mascara set a curl that would last all day into evening. The 'new' one does not.

Any mascara I have is Lancome. I'm not that choosy about which one although I NEVER buy one that is lash building/thickening. Those seem to have little extra bits that end up in my eyes before days end. It's almost like they work their way down my lashes (which are not short) and into my somewhat sensitive eyes.

If I have Lancome Hypnose Doll Lashes in my stash I'll put some on lower lashes and not get raccoon eyes. But I wear only a little tinted moisturizer on my aging skin. YMMV.

Lately I have tried a trial size from Charlotte Tilbury I liked-but have mostly worn Clinique. I only buy-or get in gifts-the trial size ones-they work so much better to me. That it the trick for me. I haven't owned a full size mascara in years. I've never had the problem of smudging on my lower lashes, but I barely put any there anyway. I concentrate more on upper lashes and on me, it's overkill to put much on the lower lashes.

I noticed what they are calling travel sizes for sale in some products, and that would make sense for me since I rarely wear it. I have used the gift with purchase ones or nothing at all for so long that I couldn't even guess when I last bought mascara. I bought this time because I specifically wanted to try a tubing mascara and find something for sensitive eyes. I'm tired of my eyes burning and am going through everything trying to rule out culprits. I started with the under eye concealer Mtn linked and the one I had been using before. Mostly I have stopped wearing either for a while and will try each again. It's a slow purge. LOL

I'm still hoping KSWL or someone will share what it was you can thin mascara with. I want to retest the two I got before making a final decision on them. I found an article that said contact saline solution, so I might try that.

Lascatx, have you tried clinique? I was wondering about clinique for sensitive eyes? I have used Maybelline great lash for years. i have tried other brands here and there, but always go back to great lash. Mine is not the washable, but it comes off with my face cleanser. I do use it on both upper and lower with no smudging. i tried the tube mascara, did not care for it at all; or the ones with fibers.

Tina, the tubing mascara I bought is a Clinique one and I have a couple of gift with purchase ones I have held i reserve. In college and all my young adult/professional life, I wore mostly Clinique for anything that went around my eyes - until they dropped the Touch Base and the product in a small bottle that was (IIRC) a primer for shadow or wear alone. I still had powder shadows for a while, but the shades changed over time. I bought a compact of the shadows when I got the tubing mascara. I will wear maybe 3-4 of the 8. Good to know the Maybelline waterproof doesn't require a special remover. I don't want to have to buy another cleanser for something I seldom use. The jury is still out on the tubing mascara for me. I like the idea of it, but it went on much too much. I'm not sure if this tube is a bit dry and therefore clumpy -- the reason I was looking for what to use to try thinning it. I don't think I can take it back because I tossed the box.
