Pass-through Living Room Furniture Placement

Looking for some creative ideas for furniture placement in our small (12x14) living room. Furniture placement is challenging as there are two large openings into the room, and you have to walk through this room to get from the front sunroom/foyer to the rest of the house! We are hoping to get as much seating as possible as it is our main gathering space. The room will also house the tv and I would really like to include a traditional-style electric fireplace. I have not purchased any furnishings for this space so I am open to any ideas or suggestions! I am including a few photos with wall measurements.

as much as I dislike a TV over the fireplace, looks like it's your best option. Keep your focal point(s) together. Sofa on the opposite wall and occasional chairs surrounding an ottoman or coffee table. You could get another sofa to create an L shape off the wall.

No sectional, it will just make the room feel smaller, Everyone like their own seat, so look for smaller, low back swivel chairs. Complimentary, not all matchy. Carpet on the floors?

That window corner would be nice for a club chair and floor lamp, or desk under the outside window.

I was happy to find my new home without a fireplace and I live in Michigan. My living room is open to everything and no FP helps with furniture placement.

I would get a linear fireplace that is built into a cabinet ( or just frame out the wall below the tv). They don't need a lot of depth, so it won't intrude into the room. If you do a linear unit, it can be low enough so that the tv doesn't get too high.

A small sectional, or sofa with an accent chair, should be able to work in this space. You could also look at doing four swivel chairs around an ottoman instead. Below is an image from a recent design of ours which might help:

A Linear fireplace and wall mounted tv will leave room for a sectional with short chaise sides and large ottomans. If you need that much lounging space. Depends on the number of users. I'd go for maximum comfort.

IMO first get the furniture placed to maximise seating and comfort ( no sectional) then see if you NEED a FP for a look.

How many people do you need to seat every day? And when entertaining?

I would like to hang sweating for at least 6-7 people. Would love to hear thoughts on which wall to hang the tv on (in between the windows, or on the opposite wall).

Sorry, darn auto correct! Should say “have seating”, not hang sweating!

For 6-7 people, you will need two 3-seater sofas and a swivel chair if they all want to watch tv. Use plan shown by Beverly with one sofa replacing the single chair and a new single chair on the opposite side.

You can get lounging family comfort with a sofa-chaise or ottoman.

This chair swivels and glides. Arhaus Walsh goes on sale for 1400.

For the wall choice, place the tv so traffic passes in front of the tv and everyone seated. That placement gets you the maximum room width of 12 feet for furniture arrangement.

Thank you all for the great suggestions! I was going to mount the tv between the windows, but am now considering putting it on the opposite wall.

Great thread, lots of good suggestions already. For a pass-through living room, furniture placement really becomes a choreography of sightlines, flow, and focal anchors. One idea: keep the central pathway clear, that "doorway corridor" needs to feel natural, not blocked. Place your sofa with its back against a wall or slightly off-center so you’re not bisecting the room. Use slim, low-profile pieces (console tables, benches, narrow bookcases) along the path edges rather than bulky cabinets.

If you want a focal point, orient seating toward a fireplace, TV, or view, maybe float two chairs or a loveseat opposite the sofa, leaving a generous walking gap. Use rugs and lighting to define seating zones without heavy furniture lines. In tight spots, consider placing a floating console behind a sofa instead of a solid wall unit, so you retain openness. And always walk it in full scale, tape out paths on the floor (60–90 cm clearance), and see what feels crowded.

Since your doorways are not directly across from each other, it won't make a difference. However - you may want to watch the light - will it cause a glare on the tv? The first time I laid out my living room, I thought it was great until the seasons changed then the light completely washed out the tv. Plus - where is your heat/ac located? Will that determine furniture placements?

If the wall with the large opening and adjacent 42” wall is not load bearing, consider getting quotes to move the opening over (into the 42” wall area) to better line it up with the opening on the other end of the room. It will give you a better traffic flow than the current diagonal traffic path.
