Helped to refurbish an old quilt for a friend

last month

My friend asked if I would re-quilt an old quilt that she was trying to refurbish for a friend. The quilt was evidently a childhood treasure of a woman whose mother, the quilt's maker, had recently died. Before she died, she had started to repair the quilt, but was unable to finish it. The quilt was incredibly worn for a quilt that was only 20-30 years old. It must have been loved and washed almost to death. It had a very thin batting, and the backing was shredding at all the quilt-in-the-ditch lines. My friend had prepared new backing, and she asked if I would provide the batting and quilting, for a fee. I waited to start until I had bought a glide foot for my longarm, because I knew my regular foot would catch on tears in the quilt top. I chose a flower panto that was quite dense, thinking that it would hold the disintegrating top in place better. It came out a lot better than I thought it would. I would not have spent money to repair that quilt myself, but I guess sentimental value is worth more than money sometimes.
