To paint or not to paint?

I purchased two antique twin beds that I can’t decide if I should paint. They’re the traditional color of beds made in this design. My problem is matching the linens, wall color, etc. to go with the beds. Any help is appreciated.

This is hard to answer without knowing the whole context of the room and home...photos of the whole room would help us help you.

While it would be nice to see the whole room in context, as @thinkdesignlive states, it seems that white linens. Wall color could be white, a pale green that works with the bed, or even a pale yellow/gold lighter than the accent on the bed. All of those would be safe colors.

Other than MCM furniture i have no knowledge with re to antiques from other eras. I have been told, however, that antiques are more valuable in their original state, painting them could possibly devalue them. You need to consider that first.

I hope they look good in your home as they are. Painting would really destroy and devalue these vintage pieces.

Seems like this bedding from Pottery Barn with dark green and gold in the print would work well.

Did you purchase the additional pieces?

Please do not paint! The paint is essential to the beds’ design and probably the reason that they appealed to you. The fact that you have a matching pair makes them even more wonderful. I like the suggestion of white vintage-style linens; I also like Bev’s Pottery Barn linens, if used in moderation. Something red and plaid (also in moderation) would be fun, especially w pale yellow walls ( think straw, not butter. )

I would not paint them. The bedding really depends on what room they are used for. Guest room, boys or girls room

Dont paint them. Completely destroys them if so.

Really can’t say unless we know the flooring, wood with an area rug? Pink beige carpet? Grey LVP that was all the terrible rage? Will you be painting the walls to work with the beds or no? Again, 🤷‍♀️

Paint for walls is always the dead last decision

If you can't figure it out, please sell these. It would be criminal to paint them. Here are some ideas...

    BEDDING

    RUGS

    WALL COLOR

I'd love to see these against denim blue walls like the walls in this pic.

If you want to be maximalist - this wall paper

A lovely grass cloth like in this room

Look at British design sites. They know much better how to have fun with decorative furniture like this. They break all kinds of rules and make pattern perfect.

I’m sure their uniqueness is what drew you and it would be shame to paint them. I think a bold wallpaper is where to start and as they say “go big or go home“. You’ll have a good reference base on which to make the rest of your decisions. Will be stunning!

Agree -- do not paint. I'd go with ivory/off white bed linens, some shade of off-white that coordinates with the colors in the bed. You could even do dark brown to mirror that in the bed, if you like dark.

ETA: I'd keep the bedding solid or color or as plain as possible if not completely solid. Last thing you'd want is a pattern competing with the bed frame -- let the bed be the star.

Thank you!!! I love all of your ideas. I’m not going to paint the beds. I’m using them in a guest room. I primed all of the walls with with primer last night. The flooring is beige tile, at the moment. I bought gold and cream vertical wallpaper to create an access wall before I bought the beds. @beverly someone bought the rest of the set before I got there. I have a long & narrow dresser I will paint green to match. I’m going to look for the solid bedding today while the wall primer dries. You’re all so kind to help. Thank you very much! I’ll update with photos.

Before: Purchased the wallpaper before the beds, the trim work is primer, blinds will be replaced, and eventually the flooring will be replaced.

    Can you return the wallpaper?

I don’t think the paper will do the beds (and eventually the room) justice and it will be much harder to coordinate around. Using a paper that has a few colors + using compatible bedding and accessories (which is part of the big picture) will create a more coordinated room.

Suggest cutting two full strips and tape onto wall and it will be worth the cost if you decide not to use. Hopefully you could return the rest or ignore all of the above! You may love though and are confident you can tie the room together. Good luck.

Imagine the result by using multiple colors that highlights its features.

If not comfortable with too much pattern, you might be better to paint (a warm shade) and you’ll have a lot more options when accessorizing. What is your vision and then people will be able to make more relevant suggestions.

Sure the wallpaper isn't ideal. And, if it is returnable, I certainly would. But you can still get creative with the paper and the beds to make them work in the space. You just need a third random wrench in there to make them all harmonize.

I hope it's returnable or of such a low cost as to not matter. It's very crisp clean yellow and white and doesn't play well with the beds at all. That paper would work with the green on the bed just fine but that muddy yellow beige tone on the bed is not jiving with the wallpaper. I like what Maureen posted.
