Color of Bahama Shutters

last modified: 27 days ago

I started a thread about this a while ago, and then never got motivated to go forward. But a neighbor in a similar house just added Bahama shutters and we think they look great.

If we were to add them, which color do you think is best? Or do you not think they look good?

This is the house now:

This is the color of the front door, which can't really been seen in the photo:

We could do shutters in the same blue:

Or we could do them in black:

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks.

ETA: I was just on a few sites and white seems to be a very popular color as well:

You couldn't pay me to block the view from any of my windows with permanent shutters!

All my windows are wide open to the views and natural light, unless they are the ones on the west facing side, and then the blinds only come down as the sun starts to hit the windows mid afternoon.

Maybe you can ask your neighbor to show you what the shutters do to your view and the natural light in those rooms. I don't like interior plantation shutters either!

So, am I to assume you're not a fan of Bahama shutters? LOL

This is a beach community and they're not that unusual here. Our house faces SW and the sun is a definite issue for most of the year. That, added with the fact that I don't like being on a stage for all the world to see into our living room and one bedroom means we currently have curtains closed on the windows most of the time. I think the shutters would actually let in more light than my curtains.

Now the back of my house, looking out onto my lovely and totally private yard, has nothing on any windows. And yes, it is the brighter and lighter side of the house.

I'm looking for opinions on which, if any, of the different colors look good.

Color wise, I like the blue, but agree with thinking through the impact on natural light in the house. Do you need some filtering?

The blue looks best, especially since you are in a beach community. It's true they won't let in much light, but that's not a problem as long as you have adequate artificial lighting. I would paint the chairs on your porch too, to match the shutters.

I think white to match the trim and leave your blue door as the accent color.

I would go with white to be neutral because that door won't likely stay that color forever.

Also, from the interior view looking outside, any color might throw off what decor is going on inside.

Do you live in hurricane area ? If not those are just plain silly . Solar shades provide heat and UV protection can allow air to move when windows are open and provide daytime privacy , mixed with drspes for nightime and the big bonus is you keep the view always . I think in a hurrican type climate those serve a real purpose but to slap them on a house for decor is silly , not to mention bvery expensive . I totally think this is bad idea for the purpose you wnat

Yes, I live in very serious hurricane country - just ask my homeowner's insurance!

I'm a bit amazed at how much other people are concerned with natural light in a room in someone else's home, specifically when I've very clearly indicated that I am not worried about it. Same thing with a view. I don't get the desire to have a view out to the street in front of my house. As I said in another post, the backyard is a different story. It's a pretty view with a pool and outdoor seating, so that's one I'll keep unobstructed.

The hard part is that my husband favors the blue, but I like the white.

I think I'm going to have to ask around a little more for opinions of friends down here.

Thank you to anyone who posted with an actual color choice.

I would stick to white because they will absorb less heat than the dark color. But another very budget friendly, and in my opinion beautiful, solution is to use window film for privacy. You can get some that looks like stained glass or clear etched glass. There is translucent, opaque and some even offers thermal protection. Amazon has a huge selection. I don't use the glue kind; I use the "magnetic" film. Just measure, cut to size, spray the window with a water/soap solution and it will cling with no adhesive. Easy to apply, stays on well, but is easy to take off if you get tired of it.

We don't have these where I live so I Googled them and some do provide a filtered view from inside the house...just enough to be practical.

I like them and I think they would be a great relief from the sun.

Although white is the safest, I like your blue ones but you would have to keep your door color to match.

Now I know what they are for I would do white .

White. I imagine a darker color will begin to fade with time in the Florida sun. But, I would look into what the manufacturer warrantee says.

It may be the way to get white!

Just googled to learn more. Looks like some can offer storm protection.
