Floof: How much caffeine do you take every day?

I was reading how much difference there is in different brands of coffee, both brewed and instant. One can ask Google and it will come up with the amount your brand has. And of course there is caffeine in some sodas.

What's your caffeine intake?

We drip-brew half-caff, generally Maxwell House, and accordong to a quick lookup it has 50-65 milligrams per 8-oz cup. I probably have 4-5 cups a day, so about 200 and up, and very rarely after 12 noon, Enough for us, but not enough to make us jittery or insomniac.

Thanks for the tip to look it up.

Usually none. I drink a mug of Inka, grain based. I might have a Dole sugar-free powder drink I mix with water. A few weeks back I was drinking Pepsi Zero, no sugar or caffeine in it either. I did eat a handful of Hersheys choc chips.

    • Milk chocolate: 5-10 mg per ounce

Just one large mug in the morning to kick start the ol' brain.

I just drink decaf but I grind my own beans and make it pretty strong, so I think it has some caffeine, but not a lot. I only have one cup per day usually, but will get an iced decaf sometimes in the summertime in the afternoons.

300-400 mg a day. I drink lots of unsweetened green tea throughout the day that I brew every couple days for the health benefits and then I also drink a couple diet sodas daily because I like them. I also drink zero sugar powerades to help with my leg cramps and water during my daily workouts but those do not have caffeine in them so are irrelevant.

Whatever's in one cup of coffee and one diet coke.

One cup of instant coffee, no fizzy drinks.

I drink a whole pot (Bunn coffeemaker size) of Folgers Classic Roast every day before noon. No other caffeine, not even chocolate. (Well, maybe a bit of chocolate once every couple of weeks or so.)

Probably more than I should :-) I make a French press every morning that provides me with 2 very generously sized mugs. I also drink several tall glasses (3-4+) of cold brew iced tea, unsweetened, throughout the day. And now and again, squeeze in the occasional double latte.

Doesn't seem to affect my sleep, as I can drink a caffeinated drink at any time of day without concern..

Rarely ever have a soda and I don't really like much chocolate so 99% of my caffeine intake comes from coffee and tea.

Usualy none, starting around ten years ago. Once a week I will have chai, usually midmorning. I don't miss coffee.

Why do you think Starbucks is failing?

Neither DH nor I think their coffee is better than dishwater, but that's nothing new. When DH's favorite Lavazza flavor vanished, he tried Starbucks and a local coffe shop -- still weak 'dishwater' with their plain coffees -- the ones absent dairy and/or sweetening. Is the appeal merely the 'coffeehaus' -- a gathering place?

Usually just one largish cup of pour through in the morning. Sometimes an espresso later or in the evening. I'm sure it's a fair daily dose of caffeine but I've never measured it.

I drink coffee for the flavor, not for the caffeine. Not infrequently, I have no coffee in the morning when the day's schedule doesn't allow time. I don't need it to wake up or have a clear head.

I never drink decaf. I think people who do must become accustomed to its weak blandness in the flavor department. I understand some need to because of not tolerating or having issues with having caffeine. I think if I were in those shoes, I'd likely find something else completely different to drink.

Pretty much one large (16 oz.) mug of really good medium w some dark roasted fresh beans, freshly ground, pour over method.

Rarely some chocolate (I forget!). That’s about it.

Clearly you've never had Zabar's decaf. :-) I used to drink regular coffee, but switched to decaf about 10 years ago. If you buy the good stuff, made via the water process, there's no diminishment in taste. Peet's is also very good.

I haven't heard of Zabars but I've had many kinds of water process decaf, usually when no choice was available. I've had Peets (that's was a local company in my area) and also from more premium sources. What I've tasted suggests that flavor is lost in the decaffeination process. It doesn't taste like unprocessed coffee. If you like the flavor or have reasons to use it instead of regular coffee, great!

Zabar's is a NYC institution. They're known for their smoked salmon, breads, cheeses, and other culinary delights. They also roast their own coffee. It's an amazing place: https://www.zabars.com/.

Despite the pricey things on their home page, much of what you can buy there is less expensive than in the supermarket. For example, last time I was there I got a full pound of their decaf for $13.99 (it's cheaper in the store than online); in my local supermarket 10.5 oz. of Peet's (which is the size of the bags now - shrinkflation), is $15.99.

I grew up with a Scottish nana and we always drank tea, never coffee. Even a nice cup of tea at bedtime while we read a bit. As a result, I think, caffeine has never affected me. I only started drinking coffee ( and beer) after I married my DH. Black only. I now drink 3-4 cups with my breakfast. I drink for the flavor, not to wake me up. I don’t drink it during the rest of the day, though, unless it’s an occasional latte.

Just adding, it is a great place. I have wonderful childhood memories of being sent on Sunday morning on the crosstown bus to buy nova, bagels, chopped liver, herring. Never tried their coffee, but everything I did buy was quality.

bookwoman, it's a big country between where you are and where I am. My state has been a large recipient of internal and external emigration since forever (just like NYC) so I'm sure there are people out here who either from their own experiences or those of ancestors know NY City things. I'm not one of them. You know the old cliche, a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. Not there or anywhere on your coast. I've been to NY city and state and elsewhere in the broad region very many times, I've always enjoyed myself with the wide diversity of things there are to do, and I've always been happy to fly back west when the time came. Different things and different places make different people happy, it's all good.

When I was young I drank a lot of very strong coffee. I started drinking coffee as a baby and do not remember not having my own mug in the morning and afternoon. It didn't bother me at all but I take it with cream and sugar and started cutting back over the calories. These days it is one cup of very strong French roast. That is somewhere north of 100 mg a day.

Tea drinkers pat themselves on the back in reference to caffeine. It is about half of a cup of strong coffee but tea drinkers often glug ice tea all day. I never heard anyone say ice tea kept them awake and of course some brands of pop have plenty of caffeine. People used to be told not to eat eggs. I take being leery of caffeine as per.

Two large mugs of coffee every day.

I drink about 2L of iced Hojicha tea a day - that's a roasted green tea, so it's pretty low in caffeine. So, probably about 50 mg a day, just a titch more than a can of Diet Coke.

" I never heard anyone say ice tea kept them awake "

When I used to drink iced black tea, I never found it kept me awake, but when I stopped drinking it, I did have a mild headache for the first few days, which I think was a little caffeine withdrawal.

    2 to 3 cups usually.

I don't drink coffee...never even had one cup. I like to smell it, but I don't care for the taste. I do drink tea and usually a couple of sodas, altho I quit them recently ...then fell off the wagon, and started back. Mostly I drink water. I have never had a problem not being able to sleep. I am outside most of the day. They say fresh air helps you sleep better. I also wake up fast. When my eyes open, I am wide awake.

Very little...I drink decaf coffee and decaf tea. I probably get more caffeine from chocolate than anything else. Still have difficulty sleeping...

Should be miniscule nowadays. I've never taken coffee. Iced tea in abundance until the second (2013) or third (2018) kidney stone, whichever was it, upon advisement to avoid tea (and dark-cola soft drinks) as a causative factor. Not much chocolate.

Usually I drink one cup of Folger's Black Silk coffee in the mornings. Occasionally, very occasionally, I'll have a second cup, either hot or iced, in the midafternoon. I don't drink any tea or soft drinks, so I think my caffeine intake is minimal.

Up until about fifteen or so years ago, I'd have a cup of coffee going almost all day long, and I'd drink iced tea with my meals. No real reason fir changing other than my tastes have changed. I just don't crave it like I used to. I still love my coffee, but one cup is sufficient. I don't really like tea anymore. much prefer water with my meals. I guess my tastes have just changed with age. I never have cared much for soft drinks, except for an occasional cherry coke in my teens.
