Trim paint color with paneled retro rooms

Need help deciding on trim color for a house we are purchasing. we’ve decided to keep the retro look of the paneling instead of painting, but want to nix the dark trim. Want to paint the trim and I’m conflicted about a painted trim color that will look good with the paneling and can carry through the house. my palette is typically warm neutrals and earthy tones.

The trim in this area has the potential to become distracting and take away from the tranquil feel of the wood. The current trim, while not beautiful, receeds and doesn't call too much attention to itself. Tread cautiously with lighter neutrals or colors here. You do not have to have the trim match the trim in your other rooms. You need not have the same trim throughout.

What color will you paint your interior doors?

I agree with @Kendrah about the trim. I’m trying to visualize different tones on the existing trim. Lighter color becomes a beacon & attracts attention. Same as the darker color you have. I would test what a paint color matched to the paneling looks like. I’m having a hard time visualizing that but it seems like the only option.

Either leave as it or lighten the trim so that it matches the paneling.

If you just removed the paneling above the 8ft height, you could just paint the upper portion of the wall

Swiss Coffee or other warm white. I would paint or remove the paneling - unless it is real wood and not just cheap 4x8 sheets.

I would leave it stained like it is. It looks nice just the way it is, and paint will take away from what you already have. Remember once you paint it, you cant go back to staining, unless you carefully strip all that paint off, and in the process of that, you would most likely ruin all the paneling. Just leave it and live with it. It looks nice.

I like Beverly's lighter trim, quite lovely. No need to draw attention to the trim.

I try to match the existing paneling and start sampling colors like BM Warm Tan

^ If you do want to paint the trim to match the wonderful paneling, you can use a Nix color scanner to determine the right paint color. Scan the wood in multiple places and the Nix device will tell you what paint colors match. Mini 3 Color Sensor – Nix Sensor Ltd

I wouldbe checking the panelling to make sure worth keeping . If real wood then leave it as is no paint on the trim if awful cheap panel let it go and take it away

It's doubtful any 8ft paneling is worth keeping. If it was real wood it would likely be planks and sheets. I would say 8 out of 10 times when I have seen paneling in a vintage home it's usually covering deteriorated plaster that is coming off the walls. It would be nice to see if perhaps the staircase under the paneling was a treasure. Sometimes they are.

I would match the trim colour to the paneling.

Yes to matching the trim color to the paneling.

It looks a lot like 1960s/1970s inexpensive masonite paneling, not real wood. We have it in our sun porch and we painted it white when we moved in many years ago. Unless you really love the dark look, painting it a lighter color would brighten the entire area. If you do love the dark look, then painting the trim the same color as the paneling looks best, as in Bev's rendering. Or you could just paint the upper portion, no need to remove it.

My first inclination is to paint the trim to match the paneling so it disappears as much as possible.

Try to pick a color that is close to the paneling that's the best paneling I seen in years!
