Purple Daylilies of 2025

last month
last modified: last month

Post your photos of purple daylilies from the 2025 season here. There is no limit on the number of pictures you post. We will be having lavenders and lilacs on a later day. You can post your seedlings along with registered cultivars. The next color will be pink on Wednesday.

I'm way down on purples since my move, and there was a lot of bug damage on my purple and red daylilies last season. So many looked bad in the photos that I'm not posting them.

Star Lord, always one of my favorite purples, did well and was not plagued as much by the bug damage.

Make It Snappy had some loverly blooms. I look forward to that one clumping up.

Applique bloomed early - before the bugs got going.

Debra, your photos are really nice despite the less than ideal season we had. I had the same outcome here…generally not the best bloom season here.

    Upgrade had fewer blooms.

    Witch’s Stick, a late bloomer.

    Nosferatu, an oldie I have.

Mary’s Baby had fewer blooms but all were nice.

Lovely Miss Lausious got moved, the blooms looked so different. Blooms should be heavily ruffled. It is in a better spot, hopefully it will improve.

Laura Harwood did well. For the most part my late bloomers did much better than the early and some mid bloomers. Scapes were shorter.

Heavenly Breezes looks purple to me, dont remember what the stats are. I liked this wild bloom, very tall.

Getting Airborne did poorly this season, it is rather early here.

    Cameroon Nights

Bela Lugosi did well, sun photo.

I love the color posts, and starting out with one of my 2 favorite colors is great! The timing is good for me, as we just had a wedding this past weekend [# 4 son Josiah to a lovely lady Jordan] and are done with all the prep.

Debra, you have a lot of nice ones. My favorites are Star Lord, Mr. Mayor, Reckless Girls, Perseus' Sandals x JJ Flash [I love the one you sent me!] and Pink E. x S. Samantha 4. Sherry, Upgrad, Lovely Mis Lausious, Bela Lugosi and Cameroon Nights are my favorites!

Upgrade did not have a good year here either. And Reckless Girls even less so. Nosferatu is an older one whose color I like--a rich reddish purple. Glory to His Name is a solid earlier bloomer.

Sherry, I suspect that your season was the most difficult of participants here, as you had a rain deficit earlier in the season. The season here would have been stellar, with all the earlier rain we had, except that horrible heat in late June and July washed out a lot of colors. It was humid and hot with unrelenting sun. Then from August 1 to the third week of September, we had a half inch of rain. Just when Mother Nature had us thinking that we wouldn't have the drudgery of watering. I was exhausted later.

I am still labeling pics, so let's see what I have recently found.

Psycho Circus was the best I've seen it. A dip.

Hey Soul Sister was okay, but not the great year that many had.

I rather like Another Night (out of tet Morning Mood), but bud count is not impressive.

Blackberry Dragon was glistening, but always had competitors in the photo background.

Hardy Har Har performed very well and held better in the sun this year.

Tonight's the Night is a very rich sultry purple.

Free the Captives looked good. Later bloomer. So far, not a fast multiplier.

Soli Deo Gloria had flawless blooms over a long time. It seemed a bit shorter than usual, but a lot of Emmerich's could use a few more inches.

Lydia's Regal Robe made a display.

Night of the Iguana is well budded and blooms over a long time. Unfortunately, it starts to open the day before, so has to be situated where it is free of dews. Here it is on a good day late in the season.

Elizabeth Peacock has been quite vigorous.

Purple Lives Matter is not at full clump strength yet.

Battle of the Ages I hope will gain some height. Relatively new.

Make It Snappy is now at clump strength.

Star Lord has performed well, but taken a while to establish.

Mantis, Tonights the Night is my favorite, I love the deep saturated color. You are correct about my season being tough. I lost at least 6 daylilies. Over the almost 3 decades of daylilies here I had only lost 2 total until this past season. 2026 has to be better.

It is really nice to dream of daylilies at this time of year, especially with light snow falling. Looking at images of daylilies just warms my heart. There are certainly purple daylilies that I am going to have to add to the collection: SOLI DEO GLORIA, STAR LORD, and BELLE ISLE SENTRY. I added ELIZABETH PEACOCK this past summer.

    Here are my contributions:

Initial bloom on VOICE OF TRUTH that was plantedin May.

Later bloom on VOICE OF TRUTH

SEA SHANTY - also a new acquisition this past Spring.

I see David mentioning snow. Here in Indy we had snow on Sunday and Monday with an accumulation of 1.8 inches. Did the rest of you have snow? It seems far too early for it.

Brad - Woodside Amethyst has an impressing number of buds! There are lots of nice seedlings in your second post.

David - You have so many nice ones! My top favorites would be Color Me There, Hits Different and Changed in a Moment. Soft Skills has great color contrast!

Mantis - Yours are all enticing, but Tonight's the Night draws my eye the most. Of course, I love your photo of Star Lord. I'm glad to see it's finally establishing for you. Mine did well here for one planted so late the fall before. While it usually had bud counts in the 20s in Nashville, it had 18 buds here. The blooms in the Soli Deo Gloria picture are exquisite. Mine did not bloom last summer. The flower on Battle of the Ages is a real looker. The only reason I never added that one is its registered height of 24 inches, and Emmerichs always tended to be shorter than registered for me. I love seeing the clump of Make It Snappy. Mine has already added two fans, so I'm happy with the increase.

I don't get much purple here except for Mary's Baby and only then when the weather is just right. Most of the "purples" are some sort of maroon, merlot, burgundy shade. Unless Debra comes up with a "called Purple not purple" catagory, I'll stick to enjoying others in that color range here. Of course Star Lord and Mary's Baby are my top two all time favorites and have been that way for years now. Glory To His Name, Lovely Miss Laucius, Soli Deo Gloria, and Hits Different are the ones that stood out to me just now.. Brad: Some of your seedlings look good too.............Maryl

Less than an inch of snow here, but wind chills in the teens. Now warming up, but an unpleasant shock.

I see several of David's that I hope to see more of, including the unusual Soft Skills (NGA suggests variance in form and color), Hits Different, and Sea Shanty (which didn't bloom here). Crying in the Wilderness had decent height and plentiful bloom here this year. David, note that Star Lord is evergreen.

Tonight's the Night is a 5-inch bloom. Also, the bluish eye is more pronounced in the picture's lighting (I had to choose from 2025 pics). Form is also a bit variable.

Maryl, ideally we would have a near black category. I see that Blackberry Dragon is described by the hybridizer as raspberry, which I suppose would go in the red category. Ah, the poor cultivars without a category.

Sultry Girls was stellar this past year, and is certainly in this category.

Jackie Canner loved all the rain.

Mantis, my favorites are Psycho Circus, Soli Deo Gloria, Night of the Iguana [where do they get these names?], Tonight's the Night [great form and color], Sultry Girls.

David, my favorites re Sea Shanty, Alone Again, Desire of Nations [form and color are great], Planet Max, and Dashing Young Aquanaut--form and color are perfect!!

So many pretty purples posted here--too many to point out favorites. There are also many wonderful purple seedlings.

We had the worst growing season since 2012 here this summer. Heat and lack of rain really took their toll. Plus my ability to get around the garden was so limited I didn't get many photos. Here are my purples.

Absolute Ripper was beautiful this year.

Nancy - That is a wonderful photo of Absolute Ripper! Mine did not bloom last season, despite being one that got planted in early September. The teeth on John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt are impressive. I'm looking forward to seeing that one bloom here next year.

Maryl - Most "purples" in high temps do take on a lot of red tones. I always loved your photos of Mary's Baby.
