Do You Take AREDS 2 by Preservision?

last month

Our ophthalmologist told DH to take this vitamin combination. It's supposed to offer some protection against the macular degeneration she sees beginning in his right eye.

A quick search didn't provide much history.

Thanks.

Jim takes it, but he's got pretty advanced MD, so no telling if the stuff works. He's been taking it for years now.

DW and I both take it. Was highly recommended several years ago by our ophthalmologist due to family histories of vision problems. After a few months, I noticed that I no longer had red flashing dots at night, though it did not seem to help with my cataracts.

    YMMV

My mom had macular degeneration. My ophthalmologist recommends that I take it.

Yes. I take it, both my ophthalmologist and my retina specialist strongly recommend it. I've been on it for several years now, but I have to admit that for the first couple of years I didn't take it as faithfully as I should have. Partially because it sometimes upset my stomach and seemed to aggravate my restless leg syndrome, and partially because of the expense. Now I wish I would have taken it as instructed regardless of those side effects, as the dry macular degeneration has gotten worse, and I also have GA. And maybe, if I'd taken it as directed, things would be better now.

I've found that the chewable version is much easier on the stomach, and eating a cracker or two when I take it also helps that. And an OTC product, Hyland's Restful Legs, works very well.

My DH started a couple months after he was dx with wet macular degeneration this past Summer. He is legally blind from birth. The added AMD has made reading , which was already difficult , extremely difficult. Neither the Retinal Specialist or the nurse mentioned the AREDS , but it was on the papers that they hand him after each appt. I didn’t follow up reading the papers because I wrongly assumed they had gone over everything and this was a printed record. So he didn’t get started as soon as he could have.

He gets an injection in his R eye , it was monthly , it is now every 5 weeks , it will be less and less frequent as long as things are progressing. The blister in the back of his eye is essentially gone. His vision isn’t improved but the MD thinks DH needs a new prescription now. He has an appt in 2 weeks with an optometrist . We shall see… or not.

Thanks so much. This getting old sure comes with surprises.

Rusty -- I'm hoping this won't affect DH's leg spasms, now that they've calmed down. He's 'flying blind' as far as family history. He was adopted as an infant, when adoptive parents didn't want to know anything.

Not a good result here. DH took his first capsule Tuesday night. Wednesday moring his distant vision was blurred in one eye. He was OK with the newspaper, but the TV was slightly blurry. After hearing this, his doctor said not to take more until she talks to him Friday.

She asked him to look at floor tiles to see if he thought any of the grout lines looked like they were 'bending'. (No.)

    We'll know more tomorrow.

@chisue Do you use the Amsler Grid to monitor your vision?

  • last month

KW -- The doctor suggested these vitamins as to prevent problems. Neither DH nor I has had a diagnosis of macular degeneration, but we *are* old! He has had surgery on one eye to correct an inturned lower lid -- the muscles weaken and the inturned lashes irritate the eye. More recently he had procedures on both eyes to relieve pressure -- tears build up when they can't drain through the iris. (Who knew the iris has that function!)

I'm guessing the doctor was using the floor tiles as a substitute for the grid you mention. .

@chisue my DH first saw the bending in a Walmart and he knew that was a warning sign. He was looking up at rows of lights. I hope your DH gets a reassuring result atvthe Dr.

Doctor says to try again. DH will take one capsule Monday evening, and we'll see how it goes. He's to report back to her before taking more than that one.

A friend from childhood *and* her DH have to have shots in their eyes on a regular basis. Really unfair when both partners are afflicted. IDK how long she will be able to drive.

Yes, I have been taking it for years. I have dry macular degeneration

I'm glad this seems to help others. DH took the capsule Sunday night and had the blurred (distance) vision again this morning. Maybe there's another vitamin combination for him. He doesn't have a diagnosed condition; it was prevent one.
