Shelving (or other) Ideas + Plant for LR Wall - Seeking Opinions

We're designing our LR/DR (replacing some furniture, buying a new rug, better layout), and would love to hear thoughts on what shelves to buy or other things to do with this open wall space in our LR.

We're initially thinking of doing a shelving unit on the wall and maybe a plant in the corner next to the window (see photos below for details).

Please note:

- If we had shelves, we'd display a lot of photos, some sculptures, maybe small plant(s), and some books - but it would not be all books.

- We'd love to keep the space feeling open/light and accentuate the cathedral ceiling vs. making it feel smaller/lower ceilings - - - - unsure how shelving/placement may influence this feeling?

- Also like the idea of getting a used MCM shelving unit that can hold a record player + speakers.

- Plan to only have 2 chairs in the layout (possibly replacing 1 or several of the current chairs | also replacing the pewter sofa w/ a reupholstered MCM sofa, similar color though).

- In the DR we also plan to put in a buffet

Below are dimensions, new furniture layout, and inspiration photo for shelving ideas (simple/modern).

Design Vibe: MCMish/Minimalist/Boho. We like balance/space. Also host large fam gatherings. Love to let the outside influence the space. Cathedral ceilings in the space may not be as evident from photos. Walls are cool white. Like to balance cool/warm. We love that w/ the picture windows it feels like the space is almost endless (continues through the trees).

We like the look of this shelving unit, even though they're way larger than what we would use

I assume no TV in this space ? I am a huge lover of large pieces of art instaed of shelving filled with a bunch of stuff used to fill the shelves for no reason. I like open shelving if you have a nice collection that needs display like pottery you have collected for instance Th eindpo pic you show is eaxactly what I dislike what possible use are blankets ans extra pillows in a LR almost all the things I see on those shelves were used because the shelves were there Go get some art you need it in that space regardless of sheleves or not . Now a bount along low cabinet with drawers to store toys and then that large piece of art above it

@patricia correct no TV and the “inspiration photo” was really intended to convey the style of shelving we like (simple/minimalist/modern), not what we would display.

We plan to display family photos, some sculptures, maybe a few or at least 1 small plant (maybe with vines), some books (not all books), and like I said - possibly a record player + small speakers. We’d also may put some seasonal decorations up.

I’m not opposed to getting an MCM shelving unit that offers a small cabinet but I’d rather not have it be super deep and take up so much space that it forces us to push the rest of the furniture layout much further from the fireplace and into the dining room (given our plan to have 2 chairs there - see layout).

Also I’m unsure if we should go walnut (match the fireplace or light oak to match floors)?

Also, really I want insights into how any unit will influence the feel of the cathedral ceilings - will it cause it to feel lower or higher or no change, etc.?

This is a duplicate post from the one you posted about a rug? I see you’ve now moved the furniture off the walls, which makes sense.

No not a duplicate post. This is focused on a single wall, not a rug or furniture layout.

    Thanks!

So people normally prefer when one thread captures a room vs multiple posts on the same space. Good luck on your project. Looks like taking advice in the first post has been positive.

Didn’t realize that. In past posts I didn’t do that and it wasn’t ever surfaced, unless it was truly duplicative. I think if I tried to add this to a comment to my other post people would not respond at all or they’d ignore the details - which seems to happen even when the details are in the original OP, let alone comments.

@WestCoast Hopeful - Any feedback on that wall space, per my questions listed in the OP?

I know from your other post that this is a bigger project that involves potentially, over time , changing most of your living room furniture. I don’t have any cabinet or shelving recommendations in isolation and think you should build the room as one, at least with your ideas, and then you can pick away at buying over time. I do think you will need something there but what is likely dictated by some of your other design choices.

And looking more at the space I agree that large art might be better. Your windows are the star and putting something. In front of them, even though it’s on the adjoining wall, may do them a disservice. The room is really quite large and bright but extremely neutral so colour is needed. Another option is a big plant/indoor tree.

In the OP I did mention adding a plant in the corner.

We want to display fam photos, some sculptures, etc., as noted before… so this isn’t a situation where we’re looking to add shelves to organize blankets.

I was thinking if the shelving unit is not deep, it wouldn’t take away from the view - rather, similar to art, it just adds something to look at from the LR/DR, adds texture.

Sounds like you know what you want. Two people have suggested the same thing, which you don’t want, and you are circling back to your idea. Find some examples of what you want and go for it then.

I would go with a wooden shelf unit in the same shade as your mantel, or no lighter than the one in your inspiration pic, in a thinner wood and not as deep. If you have room for another unit on the other side of the fireplace it would be better, and balance your room.

    @woodrose thank you!

@WestCoast Hopeful - what kind of art would you recommend for that wall space?

We currently have a rectangle photo of DC (aligned horizontally) above our fireplace and another rectangle (aligned vertically) abstract painting to the left of the FP. Wondering if we did display art of some kind what you might recommend? I was looking at MCM colorful quilt art in a square shape, also considering a gallery style, however because it’s a large space - would need to use larger pieces.

I would do something abstract with colour. I would probably use AI honestly to just get a feel for what size and colours might be best
