Carpet vs. hardwood in family room

Our family room gets a lot of use. Large family. Guests. Puppy. Grandchildren. The carpet is in need of replacement and I'm seriously considering installing hardwood in that room to match the rest of the house, mainly for ease of cleaning and a more updated look. I plan to add a large area rug in the sitting area of the room. My main concern is increased noise (since we are already a loud family!) and possibly a less cozy feeling. Any thoughts?

Hardwood no brainer Large rugs ideally easily cleaned work well for noise add drapes too if you do not have them

No one regrets having hardwood with an area rug!

Imagine if your dog has a stomach problem and has an accident on your brand new wall-to wall carpet. Yuck!

At least with an area rug you can flip and clean both sides, drag it out to the driveway to clean/rinse, or even send it out for proper cleaning.
