A secretary china cabinet. I've never seen that combination before. Looks like something made in the early part of the 20th century, around the 1930s/1940s.

On doing some googling I found this one in the Chinoiserie style that they called a "A breakfront china cabinet, with secretary desk, in the Asian Chinoiserie style."

You can mix "antiques", just as they are, with other styles.

Florida decorating no longer follows that old rule about not being able to use dark northern furniture here. Don't know who came up with that silly rule to begin with!

It's a beautiful piece as-is, don't think I'd want to paint it.

In house museums around here, you will see similar, older pieces of furniture where the top part is glass fronted bookshelves.

You could add wallpaper, or fabric, to the back panel of the cabinet to add some color/pattern to the piece. I would do it on a removable piece of cut plywood, or similar, so it isn't permanent.

Thank you for the comments. Yes, I am torn between leaving it as is and painting it. Perhaps seeing it in the room would help. Still in renovation, so imagine without everything else on the wall. The dining table is also a dilemna. I painted the legs to lightening up a bit, but still feels very heavy with the dark top.

I would leave it. It's a lovely featured piece that works nicely with all your items.

I'd consider mounting some art on top of the mirrored wall using a canvas and Commando Hooks

Very pretty home! I love the contrast between the dark mahogany and the light furnishings. I would try to repeat the dark wood elsewhere as well. The low chest could be placed elsewhere in the room.

The dark wood is a nice pop in here against the coastal neutrals. I wouldn't paint it.

The table doesn't look "heavy", but it does look weird now with white legs :-(

If you want a tone on tone off-white room that is fine, but do it with new furniture and sell, or give away, those nice older dark stained pieces.

Not every item needs to be blue or have a shell on it for the room to feel ‘coastal’ just like not every piece needs to be white or cream for the room to feel bright and airy. A few opposites emphasize, they don’t diminish.
