Can you find the toilet?

After three weeks of chaotic travel, I somehow landed at a Courtyard by Marriott in Singapore at 1am this morning. Don’t worry, this isn’t the Podunk, Minnesota Courtyard. This one is fancy. I tried to find a list of the best Courtyards in the world but haven't had any luck. I bet this would make that list. Anyway, I am literally here for only six hours. And then… the design crime:an open-concept bathroom.Pocket doors. A floor-to-ceiling mirror aimed straight at the shower.Would that work for you and your SO? Because this setup requires a relationship strong enough to survive everything. And yes, DH is snoring right next to me as I contemplate this architectural betrayal.I can only imagine what the folks on the other side would have to say.

Several thoughts come to mind... but a few years ago, a friend was considering an open shower in her bath remodel. She eventually dismissed the idea when the thought of her husband walking into the bath while she was in the shower came to mind. And they've been married 30 years! Sometimes, we just need our privacy.

    Safe travels to you!

When we were away at various hotels in early fall, one of the hotels had a full length mirror next to the toilet. NOT my best ”angle.”

Ilikefriday, are you sure your real name isnt Where’s Waldo? Never know where you will turn up next.

I definitely do not like an open concept bathroom. Bathrooms should only have mirrors for the shoulders up.

We onced stayed at a Marriott in Las Vegas. We had our daughters with us. There was a open ” window” with shutters that went directly into the bathroom.

    We changed rooms.

I’m with ded! We never know where we will hear from you next. And I’m green with envy!

Who thinks open showers open to the room are a good idea?

This is the Gran Melia in Seville Spain. The bed was facing the shower. At least there was a curtain, albeit flimsy, that could be pulled over the glass.

This was the toilet. Even the seat was square. Maybe I’m built oddly, but my behind isn’t square!

I don’t like the layout of the room in general, not just the bathroom. We have double doors that open into our bathroom and while the glass shower is not directly in front lf the doors it is along the center axis of the room and impossible to miss once you enter. It actually doesn’t bother me at all. We both said it..…. for better or worse…..😎

The first time I saw the open BA concept was at Shutters in LA, where you can open up the bathtub to the room

(see below). I have since seen tubs in rooms a number of times, but just the tub.

I am seeing these sort of "open concept bathrooms" in more hotels, especially hipper, value chains. This is often done in such a way that the bathroom is not its own room and does not have walls per se so much as panels, often glass. It saves space and costs but can be very attractive.

One example is Citizen M, a Marriott Brand. The "bathroom", essentially a glass booth, is on the left"

This was a hotel we stayed in in Madrid which also had glass walls but in this case I loved how they did it. Loved the whole hotel!

Years ago a bunch of girlfriends (10 of us) and I went to the Grand Sirenis hotel in the Maya Riviera.

And yes, the bathrooms and bedroom were separated only by a glass wall.

Did I mention we were all girls and so my roommate was a girl? Anyway we all went to university together and had seen each other at our worst so we just laughed about it.

My bathroom in Toronto was a glass box and a deathtrap. I could barely climb in the tub. Well in was not so bad but out was treacherous because everything got slippery.

I think hotels in Europe deliberately arrange bathrooms to be slip and fall hazards.

One hotel room in Italy was reached by going from the bedroom, through a porch with large windows, no curtains.

The funniest was a tiny apartment in Paris that had a small window high up on the interior wall. Anyone coming down the stairs could look into the bathroom. There was no way to close the window.

After seeing this, Ill be sure to check pictures of the room before I book.

Where in Malaysia? I was in Kuala Lumpur for business and DH joined me as we were going on to Borneo after. I did not care for Malaysia, and it was the only place I can think of where we felt unwelcome.

Wow. It was the exact opposite for us. We were in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. I loved it and found the people to be very friendly and welcoming. It's crazy that we had exact opposite experiences.

I came across a YouTube channel a few years ago named Andrew Taylor. He is a 70yo retired interior designer and artist who has lived in Malaysia for ten years. He makes weekly videos about life in Malaysia. I have watched them all. He is who made me interested in visiting. My DH has a coworker from KL. He gave us a long list of restaurants and places to stay. I loved the energy.

I'm not a fan of the open bathroom with completely clear glass walls -- only a few probably would be. Clear glass + mirrors compound the problem.

I've been to KL, Muar and Penang but don't recall anything unusual about the level of friendliness (bad or good). But the religious influence/laws can impact all Westerners to some degree.

I've stayed in a couple of Courtyards in Asia and they were much elevated from the ones in the US, better than a regular US Marriott. They also had Club floors and lounges.

The step up into our bathroom in Rome. It was about mid-shin high. I worried about DH falling out of the bathroom or tripping going in.

The last time we went to NYC we stayed at the Park Hyatt, and it had an open concept bathroom with a glass door to the toilet and an open shower. I did not care for it at all. The design of the hotel is very modern which is not my ususal vibe. The service and location were amazing, but that bathroom was not. I have seen pics of rooms with bathtubs in the bedroom in Europe but have never stayed in one of them. I guess I am old school because even though I am usually travelling with DH I like my bathroom privacy.

Skipping down to say that's not my experience @ a Courtyard hotel - ours even had a water closet , altho you had to walk past the glassed-in shower to get to it.

That was very much my sense. A shame, and not our experience anywhere else.
