Is this Medicine Cabinet the Boss of me?

The vanity arrived last week, and I'm happy to say it's a keeper. Storage is at a premium, so a Medicine Cabinet would be ideal.

But do you think the Medicine Cabinet and light bars are too utilitarian? The sink is 17" wide, MC 21"w. I could go up to 24"w, but that drops the MC height down to the 30s". Ceiling is 10'h.

I was thinking 3x12 vertical stack shower, but it all feels so linear in this small bathroom.

What about a better proportioned mirror with a recessed niche to the left of the vanity instead of a medicine cabinet? And maybe move to herringbone shower wall to soften it up?

Have you considered an oval mirror on the medicine cabinet? Kohler makes one (saw it looking for options). There are also recessed medicine cabinets with a frame for art instead of a mirror. If you really need space, you could do both and most folks would ever know.

I like either one. I would keep looking for floor tile as it's adding to the linear feel and also contributing too much beige/gold. The entire vanity area is very gold. I think the floor is going to be too yellow against the counter so I'd go a little cooler in tone. That may cause you to select a different shower floor too.

I prefer image one, but not sure about the niche idea. Is it open? is it only on one side?

Surely there are other medicine cabinets?

As for the tile selections, mixing neutrals is very hard! Cna you find a look you like and just copy it?

You will n.e.v.e.r. regret installing a recessed medicine cabinet. Have you searched to the ends of the earth for one that is 24" x closer to 40"? I don't love how the 21" nearly matches up with the center drawers on your vanity. It makes the whole set up feel too narrow, as do the linear sconces. I'd try the sconces in the first mock up with a recessed medicine cabinet.

I'd need to see the size and layout of your bathroom to judge the tile size and layout for the shower.

Can a Dalitile rep help you find a bathroom floor that is a better match to the colors in the shower floor?

A recessed medicine cabinet is definitely better. It is possible to buy a cabinet and add the front frame of your choice. It takes someone who can find the right hardware to do it.
The shower floor tile does look “off” in color. Let us know if it’s just the photo, or is there a true color change that doesn’t match the others.

    It looks pink.

If you are looking for a monotone neutral palette for the tile, my preference would be white because of the "yellow" vanity.

Thanks for making me take a closer look at this. I'll bring a vanity drawer to Daltile with me this afternoon. You're right. The tile colors do look off. Here's a mockup of what feels too gray. You're right, it needs to be more neutral.

The next best medicine cabinet I've found is 24"w x 36h, and those finishes are not great. Here's a C&B. Should I revisit this size or is it too skimpy with the 10' ceiling?

    @Kendrah, here's the layout.

@mtnrdredux_gw I was thinking a niche to the left of the vanity, maybe mirrored or wallpapered?

I'll report back with new tile selections.

I think the cooler neutrals is the way to go. If you want to stick with a larger format floor tile, I've always liked the large hexagons. I think they come in 8". I also love penny tile for bathroom walls. I tried to use them in my shower but it didn't happen. We used 12 x 24 for the walls and used a shower pan for the floor. I didn't trust a tiled shower floor. I'd read too many shower tile disasters stories in the bathroom forum. Unfortunately, shower pans come in standard sizes and it doesn't look like you have 60".

The oval mirror-recessed cabinet combination with the sconce on the right is a nice look. I’m with @Eileen about the larger hexagon tiles for the floor. That always looks good. Then you can use a same color penny tile for the shower floor.
Glad you’re checking the color we all questioned.

    @chispa, seriously gorgeous!

Don't go with a skimpy medicine cabinet with 10 ft ceilings.

    Yup. Thanks for the reinforcement.

I somehow missed Robern, thanks so much for the that. I see they are discounted at the moment, but still so pricey. I'll have to think about justifying $2k on a little used guest room...

I appreciate the input, have some new tiles and am waiting for a hex sample to be delivered.

@Eileen, I do wish there was a shower pan that could work, upkeep is so much easier!

Have you looked at Kohler’s shower pans? I’ve seen them in some nice hotels. They are sleek looking but have a “grippy” feel to the floor so you don’t slip.

That's a good idea, Red, the shower door is Kohler so that may be the easy solution, the shower floor samples are reading pink, and the cool floor tiles blue/gray.

I'm struggling with mixing neutrals in this windowless room, and I think replacing the current recessed lighting with the new LEDs would help with tile selection. I'll start with retrofitting the current single recessed over the shower, and the recessed over the sink.

It's a windowless guest bath off an east facing bedroom, so very little natural light.

@chispa I saw that you mentioned 2 recessed lights in the shower, which I think would be pretty on the herringbone tile, so I added another to the lighting plan. I also saw your Elco recommendation. Elco suggested this replacement fixture in either 20W/1400 lumens, or 17W/1100 lumens. (incandescent equivalent 75w and 100W).

    TBD sconces flanking mirror.

    The pendant is https://www.visualcomfort.com/sarnen-small-pendant-arn5355/

    Should I light it up?

I say no. It is so easy when working on a project to be "extra." Then when it is all done, a year or so later, if you ask yourself if every little choice was worth the extra expense, IMHO the answer is often "nope." Esp. for a guest room bath! For your own bath, the answer may be different.

We all spend a ton of time on decor, and as long as we are willing to do that, i think one of our goals should be to find good value. We should be able to get value and beauty given our savvy.

Love that pendant. Three light sources (recessed in shower, pendant and sconces, will be lovely.

DId you choose a wall sconce? There are nice options for very little money

Thanks for weighing in, Mtn. I thought this was going to be a quick turnaround, but the tiles are slowing me down. Once the contractor retrofits the recessed lighting, I think the selection will become clear.

Frontgate mirro (29"W x 1"D x 46"H), Visual Comfort and Hudson Valley all have BF sales so thinking these:

ETA sconce is a 60w equivalent LED bulb

This is the same wattage, and 14" compared to the above 16", but maybe it will throw a little more light because of the wider shade.

Or go with this 32x60 and lighting you look good in (not as a horizontal bar, but flanking sconces)

You need 60" length and 30" width for a Kohler shower pan.

Yes, get your light bulbs in first. I don't understand the need for two lights in the shower, or even one light for that matter. It's not a big shower. My windowless guest bath only has a light bar. It also has a shower curtain instead of a glass door and it's bright enough in there to see what I'm washing.

If you're concerned about lighting at the sink with the sconces, you could add a lighted magnifying mirror to the wall, and it can be hard-wired in. That makes more sense than the shower light.

the need for two lights in the shower, or even one light for that matter

A few months ago I saw some influencer say the most important thing in decor is light. Different types, different heights, in different areas of the room. Pools of light are always inviting and pleasing. I have been on an adding-light-to-every-space kick and IME I have found him to be right - the most important thing in decor is light.

In a windowless room, all the more. My second rule to lighting the heck out of everything? Warm bulbs. Third rule: dimmers.

    Yes, but it's a 2' x 5' shower. With a glass door.

@Eileen, I think the pan could work since we would eliminate the curb. The K door fits 56-60". I'll have the contractor confirm, and I'll confirm with Kohler. My last K door was only compatible with a specific K pan.

ETA Thanks for mentioning the lighted magnifying mirror. I'll look into that!

The Elco brand @chispa sourced have great reviews for soft, non-glare light.. All on dimmers, and shower on it's own switch.

The 75W equivalent are available for immediate delivery on A, the 100 watt has a 2 week lead time.

    Is 75W sufficient?

You might be able to use the cast iron Salient shower pan then. They're gorgeous! Our guest shower was only 26" or 28" and we had to use the acrylic Rely, but it's a nice shower pan too. It's also on the second floor and I didn't know if a heavy cast iron pan would've been an issue.

A reviewer returned the Rely because it was slippery. Do find that to be true?

Nope. DH uses that shower and we've had it since 2019. I just confirmed with him that it's not slippery.

Overhead recessed lights and two sconces flanking the mirror is best. I have been told that eye level lights work best for makeup and grooming.
This is my powder room. It works well for people of all heights.

Thank you @Eileen and @gardener123. I have a 2” folder of wallpaper samples I can send to you. My powder room is near my open concept Great Room and entryway so it had to work with everything else. I think tiny rooms need to be fabulous so you ignore how cramped they are.
