Red Daylilies of 2025

From rosy reds to crimson and black reds, post your photos from 2025 here. Feel free to post seedlings along with registered cultivars. The next color will be near whites on Wednesday.

I had a lot of bug damage on my reds last season, more than on any other color. It wasn't until late in the season that I got clean reds.

All American Chief

Armed to the Teeth

Blood of Martyrs

Born to Reign

Fighting Fire

Porterhouse

Red Kaboom

Such a Blaze

Sensational Heart

Spacecoast Frances Busby

I have not been posting due to the death of my brother who was recently in the hospital and hospice. That consumed a lot of time and energy. I have missed a lot! I don’t know that I can catch up!!

I always love your edged reds like Fighting Fire and Such a Blaze. Your seedlings look great as well-love the look on the Diver Down seedling. Did you not have Kara Louise at one time?

I had some trees cut in my yard this weekend. Unbeknowst to me they ran a skidder over a flower bed containing a trellised clematis, iris and daylilies. I liked a lot of the daylilies in that bed but the one I will replace is Spacecoast Frances Busby. Of course I was not happy with them mangling my large antique iron trellis either!

Kate - So sorry to read of your brother's passing. My deepest sympathies go out to you, and I will pray for your family. As for catching up, take as much time as you need. We'll be happy to see your photos whenever you can post them. I did have Kara Louise in Nashville. I loved it and a couple of other Hansen reds I had, but they were not listed as being hardy in the north, so I didn't bring them. I only brought Diver Down, also not believed to be hardy in the north, because it is such a great pod setter. It bloomed, but on very short scapes with few buds. I discovered it was not getting enough rain or sunlgiht, so I moved it to a better spot this fall and am hoping it will improve next year.

Sorry to read of the damage to one of your flower beds. That must be frustrating!

Kate, so sorry to hear of your loss😔……we have missed you.

Debra, the Fighting Fire seedling is my favorite, love the shade of red.

Just a handful of reds for me.

witch King of Angmar, a nice one from Nancy.

    Soco Gap

Ruby Spider……I have two clumps of this, one didnt bloom.

Reindeer Antlers is a sunfast red.

Red Suspenders had an ok season.

    Forever redeemed.

Cherokee Star was a disappointment last season, few blooms.

Anzac is a reliable bloomer in the shade.

Kate, sorry to hear of your loss. May you and your family have comfort and peace.

Debra, your red seedlings are so pretty--hard to pick a favorite. I also like Armed to the Teeth.

Sherry, Witch King of Angmar is looking good. I also like Reindeer Antlers and Anzac.

Here are a few reds from our garden.

Gryphon Warsaw Rising is an offspring of Fulva Europa.

Joe Burrow is quite tall and quite late in our garden.

We love the rich color of Ruby Grandeur.

This noid is one of our favorites. We wish we knew its name.

    That's all for me.

    Nancy

Nancy - I like how green the big throat on Joe Burrow is! I've always liked that NOID too!

Sherry - I'm glad you like the Fighting Fire seedling. It is a happy shade of red. You have a nice collection of reds. Forever Redeemed is my favorite. I wonder what happened to Cherokee Star, Hope it does better for you next year.

Kate: Difficult time for you. My prayers are with you and your family..........Debra: I like Ultimate Sacrifice. Deep velvety red that is most appealing..........Sherry: Somewhere along the line I missed a Hensley red - Socco Gap. It sure looks like the shade of red I like best of his reds - Bright and clear. My Cherokee Star is hanging in there. This is my second time trying to grow it. One year it was vigorous enough to gift to people, the next it almost disappeared. I love the color, but it seems fickle here............Nan: That noid of yours still gets my attention. I wish you knew the name too...........I'll post my reds later...........Maryl

So I won't post Cherokee Star as Sherry's is a good shot, everyone knows my Wayah Valley. So here are 3 that were here this summer:

Funny Valentine: Very pretty older red. I saw it at a local nursery in bloom and had to have it.

Sips of Sin: Girl with a curl reaction to my weather. Gorgeous red when it gets it right:

Pleasant View Sunset: Very pretty bright red up to the low 90's. Lots of blooms on 2 year old plant:

Funny Valentine shows that some older daylilies are worth the space in the garden, just lovely. Since you are always looking for sunfast……Reindeer Antlers could be on your list.

    Sherry

Maryl - Funny Valentine looks like a nice red? Does the color hold in your high temps?

    Debra

Debra: Funny Valentine starts blooming in late May so it usually has milder summer temperatures (upper 80's low 90's) to deal with. But it does bloom a long time, so this is it again in late June when the temperature was 95. The picture was taken late in the day (after 5PM) in full sun, so it had tolerated the heat/sun up until then. I'd say it held up pretty darned well considering:

    Funny Valentine - 95 degrees:

My best red for sun tolerance was Acquire the Fire, (your recommendation, and so far, none better for holding its color in the really high heat). I had it for years and years, but it finally succumbed to an arctic blast one winter...............Sherry: I grew Reindeer Antler's for a couple years but never warmed to it. It held well, just not a pretty shade of red to my eyes in our heat. I know it is appealing to many others and I have recommended it to people whose summers seldom approach the high 90's (plus)............Maryl

Kate, sorry about your brother. Praying.

I'm getting behind. There are so many nice reds here. My favorites are:

Debra: All Am Chief, Born to Reign [love dark reds], Sensational Heart. I really love the seedling (Insider Trading X The Ultimate Sacrifice) X (Red Edition X The Ultimate Sacrifice). Great color and form. Also love Roman Cohort x Ultimate Sacrifice.

Sherry, Red Suspenders, Forever Redeemed, and Reindeer Antlers. Nancy, Ruby Grandeur, and Maryl, Funny Valentine.

    Chance Encounter x Egyptian Ibis

    Acquire the Fire is sunfast.

    Cherry Treat

Red Viper, tall and large, showy

    Bombay Silk x Vintage Wine

    Coral Majority x Bombay Silk

Coral Majority x Elegant Candy 3

    Red Volunteer

    Pinhill Claret Symphony

Kent's Favorite Two. Sunfast, had a great year.

    Hot Wheels

Brad - I think Cherry Treat is my favorite of your registered ones. My favorite of the seedlings is Bombay Silk X Vintage Wine.

Sips of Sin is an intense red. Not 30 inches here yet. I see that Ultimate Sacrifice is a parent in many of Debra's seedlings. I like the Porterhouse pic. Haven't seen P grown by others. Pleasant View Sunset I see from Burgents. Red Viper has a very green throat, it appears. I also enjoyed Forever Redeemed this year.

Joe Burrow starts here in late June. Registered as midseason. It is grown here on a south wall.

Some older ones, such as Sultry Siren. were stunning with the abundant earlier rain. Of course, this evergreen is always good here. Gates

Rogue Primate, a big plant (but not tall like Joe Burrow) is glistening in the sun. Holds very well.

    Crintonic Poncho Villa

Cherokee Star A lot of bright color this year. It did take a while to recover from division.

Jim's Song. An earlier one, it is plain but such a large clear red, with good, fairly tall scapes.

Free Ticket. To me. it has a red base. Can look quite brownish. Have never seen it like the hybridizer's photo.

Lit by the sun. Its lighter brownish color (not shown) I find less interesting, but enough pics.

Penguin Tuxedo is described as burgundy. It has done well, but we will see.

Emmerich describes Song of the Sea as burgundy.

Crintonic Crown Jewels. A bit short, but uniquely attractive.

Dark Jubilee. A Korth with good height, darker than pic, described as a purple burgundy. I should have put it with purples.

Man of Sorrows. Wonderful this year. So many "older" ones showed why they are classics.

    Megatron. Large and brilliant

Mrs. Peepers. Blooms over a long time and more sunfast than parent Regina Sitko. Davisson. I don't know why some aren't attracted to this one--perhaps preoccupied with UF forms.

    Ashwood Dark Side

  • last month

Brad: I like Kent's Favorite Two. Your Coral Majority x Bombay Silk is a unique shade of red. Does it shift colors for you during the day? Of course I like Acquire the Fire. Hard to find it from a rust free source.........Mantis: I can see Sips of Sin doing very well in your milder climate. When it got the right temperature here, the red color was beautiful.......I'm somewhat arbritary about which shades of red I like but you have several that are interesting. Rogue Primate, Sultry Siren are new ones for me, but I like the shade of red I see........Maryl

Pinhill Claret Symphony is a shade of red that seems quite different. I like the shade, but not the "very late" registration time. August is one of the few times I have for vacation, and by that time, my desire for daylily viewing is a bit sated. I am thinking of all that has to be divided.

VELVET HAMMER, named after Phil's mother, can be quite a looker. In the past few years, it has sometimes had some splotchiness, but is recovering from division.

PARADISE BAR AND GRILL (out of Jerry Hyatt) has good height.

RESIST A very bright presence in last season's garden, though shy of 6 inches and lacking perfect candelabra branching.

  • last month

Maryl, thanks for the comment on Coral Majority x Bombay Silk. No, I don't think it changes colors.

Mantis, you have a lot of great reds. Hard to narrow down to favorites, but I like best Ashwood Dark Side, Mrs. Peepers, Magatron, Joe Burrow, and Crintonic Poncho Villa.

    Brad

  • last month

Mantis - What a beautiful photo of Joe Burrow! I always like your photos of Velvet Hammer. I find Paradise Bar and Grill and Mrs. Peepers appealing.

Maryl, Brad, Mantis - The color on The Ultimate Sacrifice is only that dark when the temps are lower. It does make beautiful kids and is a wonderful pod setter. I don't if it or its progeny will flourish here long term. Friends in Michigan and Vermont said The Ultimate Sacrifice and seedlings did not survive that far north. They all made it through their first winter here OK, but there was snow cover during the coldest temps.

Here's the color on The Ultimate Sacrifice when temps are in the 90s:

Ditto on what Brad said. I like the white edge on it too..........Ultimate Sacrifice is pretty either way...........Maryl

There are so many reds to like in this posting: THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE, RESIST, THE VELVET HAMMER (coming this spring), KENTS FAVORITE TWO, SIPS OF SIN, REINDEER ANTLERS, SENSATIONAL HEART and numerous of Debra's seedlings.

    SCARLET MARIE

    FABULOUS FRIEDA

    BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS

    FEAR NOT

    THIN MAN

    SCARPIA

APACHE WAR DANCE: tough one to photograph.

    CLIFF JUMPER

    MAN OF SORROWS

    INDY SHOCKER

    PARADISE BAR AND GRILL

    STOLEN HEART

    IT'S THE RAGE

THAT IS ALL I HAVE FOR THE CATEGORY.

    DAVID

  • last month

David - I love the depth of color on Fabulous Frieda! I see you did add Stolen Heart and it made some seed for you. Let us know how that one overwinters.

    Debra

  • last month

David, good reds! The stand outs are: Stolen Heart, Apache War Dance, and Fabulous Frieda.

    Brad

  • last month

Fear Not was excellent here this year--perfect blooms and outstanding color. Scapes could always use a few inches in match with foliage here. Scarpia is a Schwartz. Fabulous Frieda was all foliage here, but grew rampantly. Laura is a big fan too, so snow cover must help. (We will be getting some tonight, but winters are not usually snow covered.)
