We need to see the DR and to be honest I do not like mirrors in DRS and that cabinet looks very small for the wall. Post the pics here in a comment it is often hard to post to your original post

Unless the mirror reflects something of interest will suggest replacing it with a piece of artwork.

Larger cabinet and a large piece of art above it. Just a guess without seeing the rest of the space and how much room you have.

The wood cabinet and mirror have an overall heavy appearance which may or may not work in the room we cannot see.

IMO contrasting the cabinet with a gilt framed mirror could be a nice combination.

The table is extended in preparation for Thanksgiving.

I was going to suggest a window-paned mirror for a lighter look - many options at various prices - just do a search online. But I really like Beverly’s gilt mirror in her photo above even better!

Also, a few posts mentioned not liking mirrors in dining rooms. True - nobody wants to look at themselves while eating! A paned mirror, with beveled edges on the glass panes does give plenty of distortion, so that doesn’t have to be a concern.
The location of the mirror at one end of the table in this particular large dining room wouldn’t seem to be an issue - paned mirror or not.

Regarding the rug…do you still want a very traditional and/or dark style or somewhere in between?

Instead of a mirror, art would help pull in the rug. Suggest holding off on mirror/art until the new rug is down (consider a different look) and you’ll have better sense of what will suit. Accessorizing is also key.

Replace mirror and add some wall art on a sides for balance. Get a lighter transitional style rug.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will definitely change out the rug and consider your suggestions for replacing mirror.

I agree with other comments, the furniture is visually heavy and dark. Why not spread these furniture peices throughout the home and pair them with lighter transitional rugs, artwork, and lamps. This could bring cohesive design throughout the home if you are struggling to decorate other rooms. Beautiful furniture. Excellent taste. Good luck.

Here's a formal dining room with some of the dining furniture lightened up.

You have a gold framed art work so echo that with a gold framed mirror. Sorry, can't get a larger image. This is a gold bamboo framed mirror. Note white buffet lamp.

--Lighter rug with and ivory and red colors

--Consider short ivory slipcovers for your chairs.

The table looks really long but could be camera angle It would be nice to see the whole sapce at one shot . I do think that tall heavy cabinet is a bit much but if it stays then a very simple buffet type cabinet with a large piece of art above it is all you need . I think the rug work well with the chairs so whay a new rug ? I do not think painted furniture looks formal ever . I really would like to see that space in one pic . I think a more linear light but as mentioned not sure if the table is very long or just camera angle
