Transforming traditional to modern kitchen, but rest is traditional?

Everything in our home is traditional style now (kitchen cabinets, built-in shelving in family room, staircase banister, etc.) but we just had a major kitchen leak and had to demo the kitchen. The restoration company saved some of the cabinets but pending approval of the insurance claim, we'd like to remodel the kitchen to a more modern look. Obviously, the saved cabinetry will need to be re-done to modern style, but would it be a mis-match/look strange to have the family room and rest of the house in traditional style?

Modern and traditional are very vague terms and mean something different to everyone. Post some inspiration pics of kitchens you like the look of. Then post some pics of the rest of your home. Then we can tell you how to bridge the two and if they will work well together.

"saved cabinetry redone to modern style "...how are you going to be doing that? are you saving the boxes or ditching the boxes [damaged?] and saving the doors? are you planning on a big refacing project? awaiting approval of insurance claim? sounds like some wait and see right now.. if you think you can plot out an execution strategy and funds will be available..show folks what you have in mind. sometimes "doctoring up" results in headaches w the extra work ....but these kinds of incidents have happened to Houzzers.

I would need to see the rest of the house but my thoughts are we live in the 21st century and our kitchens and bathrooms need to be there . You can do a kitchen with all modern ammenities but keep the finishs more simple but still maybe a color for cabinets or wood you have elsewhere to tie it in . I need pics of what your other spaces look like and BTW no to keeping some cabinets that will drive the bus . Redoing cabinets is not cost effective. Maybe post some pics of more modern kitchens you like so we get some idea of what modern means to you .

Is the home traditional or transitional? I'm asking b/c I have found that many people think "transitional" is "traditional". If transitional, it may not be too difficult to get more of a modern feel in the Kitchen.

As others have said, we need pictures of:

    • The cabinets you're saving (so we can see the style)
    • The rest of the house - especially the rooms connected to the Kitchen and the rooms on the floor the Kitchen is on.
    • Do you have any pictures of the Kitchen from before? Or, if you haven't completely gutted the Kitchen yet, take pictures.

There are plenty of ways to make a space look fresh and new without completely changing the style.
If you want specific advice for your space you'll need to post photos.

You may want to go and fight more with your insurance company. Quite often, your cabinets cannot be matched for replacement and you push to have all the cabinets replaced so they match. We have had many customers get more money because of that.

    Good luck!
