Choose a color to breathe life into a neutral living room

Did this living room just get too boring? it feels like it needs some color or something. What would you do?

Why is every thing so golden?

No one can reach from the sectional to the coffee table.

I would select a more neutral paint color for the walls. It seems to yellow

The shutter are nice but you lose soften by not being able to install drapery panels.

The pillows on the sectional could use some pattern.

The tree is too short for the room.

Thanks for your awesome insights! Unfortunately im renting so i can’t change the wall color. Its been an eyesore for me but im trying to see how work with it.

Darker wood table, pillows with some darker patterns for contrast. Is the carpet wall to wall? Can you add an area rug over it to anchor the furniture?

Geez, it's always nice to know you're renting at the beginning of the post. That changes everything.

Get some pillows boost up the tree in a taller planter. You're done.

Its actually my living room but the curtains are AI because i havent gotten a ladder tall enough to go up 12 feet

Take a picture of the real room

Can you get a different - or no - covering for the fan window over the door? Why is the swivel chair next to the TV? Can you move it closer to the end of the sofa with a side table between and a lamp? Then you could move the coffee table closer to the grouping. Maybe a new coffee table that is a darker shade. Are you allowed to hang any art on the walls. Contrasting pillows, maybe a throw. Something on the (new) coffee table to show your interests. The buttery color is very Tuscan-ish, so consider items in that vibe if you like it without going overboard. Sounds like a fun project to set out on.

Get some art on those walls then you can pul some color from that. Get some actual drapes (sorry I hate plantation shutters ) in a nice soft color from the art if heat and UV are an issue get solar shades then you get the view from outsude to add color

Wow i never thought of that. Thank you! I will go find some art and pull color from there plus add some drapes.

I agree with the suggestion also to pull the chair closer to the sofa and get a side table. Will try to capitalize on the tuscan theme subtly- that was very perceptive

The walls are the most saturated color in the room. To tame them down to be the backdrop and not the main attraction you need to add color, texture, pattern, wood elements rather than more cream and black that enhances the richness of the wall color.

A tuscan theme can feel old fashioned if not done right. Suggest a more contemporary approach with warm earthy choices, layering and working with wall color. If unsure how/what, take some time looking on line to identify a look, colors, and accessories that appeal to you. Have an overalll plan before you start buying.

Post a picture of the room. The real room.

Yup - let me post an updated photo on Thursday after i get the curtains hung in the room so you can see it with those there.

Just post it now, as is. Who cares about curtains

Honestly - the picture you posted, AI or not - just looks like no one lives there. Where are pictures? Artwork? colorful rugs? pillows? blankets? I would even be happy to see some knick knacks!

We just moved into this new home about a month ago from a different state which is why its still so bare bones :-). Looking forward to making it look like a welcoming homely living room soon.

I assume since you’re renting you don’t want to invest in buying new furniture. I think art & new throw pillows will help alot! And why in the heck would you even think about removing Plantation shutters in a rental ???!!!

Was going to suggest a patterned rug like in Jenifer Hogan's rendering -- that will liven the whole space and give ideas for other accents. You can work from art too, but the rug will affect the space more widely, especially if the art is seen from the side.

Here's another idea. Today is Sunday, Nov. 30th. Ruggables.com is having a "Black Friday Sale" on throw rugs but it ends tonight. If you see this in time, consider looking for a large rug to fit under your sectional with your favorite colors in it (not neutral colors) and you might need a pad under it so it doesn't slide on your carpet. Then you can use some of those same colors in throw pillows for the chair and your couch. It will completely change the feeling in your room. If you sew, you can buy fabric pulling colors from the rug and then re-cover the pillows you already have on both the chair and the couch. You can spend the money on a rug instead of buying curtains. When the coffee table is on top of the rug you can add a couple of books or a tray with a white orchid, etc. to add more color to your room. Or, since it's almost December, maybe some books and a little Christmas item. 🎄

Even thought the walls are a buttery yellow, I think many colors will go with it. You just need to get some stuff. Funny - we are always telling people to edit and take away but you need to add. Found some cool inspirations

    Good luck!

Thanks - this helped me see more possibilities than i could originally imagine!

@rushaniw start to think of what colors and color combinations move you. It will help you even when renting. https://www.fromhousetohome.com/whole-house-color-scheme/

k123 - love that! It's sort of what I did in my house - I have blue, yellow orange and green. My ceilings are all off white. ! Painted my bathroom ( tiny ) walls and ceiling pumpkin spice orange 20 years ago and I still love it!

My basic steps for creating a whole home color palette

    1. define the colors that must stay (Flooring, countertops, cabinets, furniture . . . )

    2. define the colors that you love. (Think about art, decor - not wall colors)

    3. find the neutral color family that works with the colors that must stay and the colors that you love

    4. pick the white that works best with your neutral

    5. map the home to show which rooms are viewable or adjacent to other rooms

    6. determine where and how to bring in the colors that you love into each room and how the colors will flow from one room to the next. (Here is where you pick wall color - may be the color you love or a more subdued version of that color or your neutral.)

    7. Test all the colors in natural daylight, in your home, in different rooms and at different times of the day to find the perfect shades that work together and work in your lighting.

I tend to prioritize the final colors based on cost, longevity and limited color selections for the component. I pick floors, cabinets, counters, furniture before wall colors, area rugs, window treatments . . .)

Love this- so thorough! Thank you!

Still no pictures of the actual space though, without AI involved, so all these colour ideas are useless

Here’s the thing. OP says he needs a ladder to hang some curtains (at 12'-0" High) so the curtains shown in the picture are A I. (???) I agree with WCH - it's all AI so far
