Late Fall, winter weather thread 2025-26

last modified: last month

(I enjoy reading about weather extremes, especially when reported by gardeners :). I'll start but hopefully this thread will have wings for the next several months).

I have a gardening relative who resides in Alberta Canada and this morning, the last day of November, she sent along a screenshot of the temperature in her town:

-25C/-13F

(@FrozeBudd_z3/4, are you seeing similary today?)

Wasn't quite as cold here, though these overnight temps are a breeze compared to the absolute brutal bitter cold that sticks and stays for several wallops each winter. Such arctic masses will at times plunge wayyyy down into the US to where although becoming modified, the effects can be devastating.

I guess I was just a bit surprised to see -25C pre December.

24F has been our coldest reading so far here in central Kentucky. Young windmill palms planted this past summer are doing well in their frost "tents" with added heat provided by seedling heat mats inside the tents.

"I guess I was just a bit surprised to see -25C pre December" ... no, the arctic generally opens its gates around the third week of November for those chilly temperatures to slump down, the Canadian prairies have no northern mountain range or deep warm bodies of water to protect and buffer the cold, this region is meant to have bitter temperatures. Northern Ontario is very cold, take away the immense modifying action of the Great Lakes and southern Ontario would be a much, much colder region than experienced.

Had freezing rain yesterday just as I was to leave the house for a doctor's appointment to travel the highway to the big city, almost had cancelled, though thankfully the further I got along the temperature had risen to just above freezing and the roads were wet rather than icy. In the middle of the night though was awoken to the sound of rain on the roof, was coming down just like a spring shower, weather sure is a mixed bag of strange these days with rain during the winter season no longer being a rarity.

Brrr, first really cold day. It is -10C (14F) but feels like -19C (-2F). Tonight will be -18C feeling like -25C (that would feel like -13F).

I just brought in more firewood for the airtight wood stove. I have a propane furnace but heat with wood all winter because there is nothing like wood heat. It is nice to have the propane kick in if the fire burns out overnight!

Hey @peren.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada, has your propane price ever come down from what is was during...COVID $$$?

Yes thankfully it has! There is still major fluctuation though like with any fuel. I can get enough firewood to last a winter and then some for the cost of filling 2 large propane tanks depending on where it is in the fluctuation point.

We experienced -15C/5F sometime last night. This is a bit cold for us given that it is only the start of the second week of November (oops... December).

"This is a bit cold for us given that it is only the start of the second week of November" ... mmmm, November?... wink, wink! :)

But, in all seriousness, time seems to be flying by and soon enough we'll be at those shortest of short daylight hours and back on the climb! Large temperature swings of late and ahead is a solid week of COLD, is okay, the wood burning fireplace keeps the place so cozy, though is plenty of work keeping it fueled for not being the most efficient insert, might look into upgrading and then hopefully using less wood! Am situated in a forest with all the wood I could ever use, but again would be nice to rely upon less if possible!

Just placed a big order for clematis, it's that time of year the money again starts flowing out on plants! :)

    The valley is a lake.

This is east of Seattle. It's beginning to recede. For the last few days all roads in and out have been closed.

    Spill the beans @FrozeBudd_z3/4!

Starting last night and likely finishing around noon today, we are experiencing a significant snow fall which was unexpectedly not predicted by the "experts" until a weather warning was finally issued around 1 pm yesterday.

    So far about 30cm/12":
