Living room rug size for cohesive space?

last modified: 5 months ago

Need some rug size advice. Ignore the tree, rug colors in the plans (just plugged in the right sizes in the layouts) and we don’t have all of our furniture yet in the room photos - but the layouts in the polls are what we will end up with for furniture. Bit of an awkward room so trying to create central seating around the fireplace with the central conversation seating floating in the room. Have three rug size options. Eventually will have a bench seat under the windows to give extra seating in the main conversation area.
1.) Small rug with exposed wood floor around and maybe add a runner behind couch and/or throw rug near the corner chair?
2.) Medium rug that pulls the rug to the bench seat to try and incorporate it more into the fireplace/conversation seating area? Again, can add a throw rug and/or runner.
3.) Large rug that fills the space?

Option 1 is easiest for foot traffic and keeping things clean. But concerned it is going to highlight the fact that everything is floating in the middle of the room. But maybe a runner and throw rug would help this… Option 2 is a more difficult rug size to find. Option 3 might tie things together but would be a hassle to clean, move furniture & keep tree needles off during December since it overlaps our tree corner.

Would love to hear thoughts for creating a cohesive and functional space! Thanks for the tips!!

3.) large rug
1.) small rug (can add runner behind couch and/or throw near corner chair)
2.) medium rug (can add small throw rug near reading chair)

IMO you choose a rug after you have all the furniture in place

I'd like to suggest a better layout for your furnishings. There are only two places for the TV, over the fireplace or on the big wall with the two mini windows. I would opt for a large screen and place the TV on the large wall.

As for the rug, your space requires an 8x10. Let's not complicate this. It's an 8x10 because you wall all the the front legs of your furniture on the area rug.

Thanks for the thoughts! Would love to fill the room with furnishings first, but that'll be another year (doing custom built pieces, so there's a long wait) and we're tired of an echo chamber with kids running through :) This room won't have a TV - we have one in another room. The chairs have to be fully on the rug because of the round bottom and they'd wobble half on, but the couch can be partially on. Unfortunately the window wall has several HVAC floor grates that we can't block with the couch. A bench there was allowing for air circulation to the floor vents. 8x10 is the small rug size, so that's helpful to know. Thanks!

There is a wide variety of leverlers or shims for seating to make them level. Check Amazon

TV or no TV I'm still recommending this layout. It works for your existing furnishings. You do need table lamps in the room. There's plenty of stuff on FB Marketplace and avail yourself of the Thrift stores.

The fireplace is still the focal point in the room, but the walkway works like this.

I would wait until you have all you furniture in the room to decide on rug (size, colour & style). A rug often looks perfect in the store but not in your room, you might have to try a few.

If I change the layout as Beverly suggests, the front of the couch will be 10’ from the fireplace. (Includes pulling the couch away from the windows/wall for curtain movement). Is that too far for it to feel comfortable/cozy? Will have a gas or electric insert in the fireplace. Thanks!

Move it and try it and see how it feels to you

10 feet is not that far. My couch is more than 10 feet away from my fireplace it feels fine.

When trying to create a cozy space you can't just move the furnishings and/or paint and expect success. Your room is missing lamps to set the mood. & and area rug to anchor the space. Try sliding your furnishings into the alternate layout and rephotograph the space.

Successful rooms are layered with elements that are necessary to express a feeling and style. Use this checklist for your room.

It works whether the room is contemporary or traditional.
