It was very good - hope you enjoy it 🙂

Just know it's not absolutely accurate.

It may not be completely accurate, but Dylan made some of the changes himself. We loved it.

Thanks, carolb. I am enjoying it thus far.

I did not buy but a couple of Dylan albums.

Ive seen it, and thought it was OK. (Im a HUGE Bob Dylan fan.) In fact my son is named after him. (Dylan that is, not Bob.) I must confess, though, that I thought Rocketman (Elton John) was a better movie. Sorry. Rocketman was so good in my mind, that I kind of have it memorized.

His music was part of the soundtrack of my youth for sure. My mom was the one who bought his music.

I never bought his music, which is kind of my test for whether I was a fan or not, but I adored this movie. Part of it was Timothée Chalamet was mesmerizing to watch, and the other was recognizing what a big part of my generation’s music included so many of his songs. I liked them all, just didn’t swoon over Dylan. I nearly never go to movies, but saw this twice.

I'm not sure that "swooning" is a normal reaction to a musician one likes. I've never swooned over any of them, my wife (I just asked her) also thought that was an odd comment to make except when talking about teenagers or teen years.

I think the point is, it's not a documentary and isn't intended to be a documentary. To say that Dylan made some changes himself (one was a name change for a former girlfriend) may suggest to some that he had some kind of editorial veto to what was done. I don't think that was the case.

One oft repeated myth of which there are several explanations, most wrong, has to do with the crowd's reaction to Dylan and his band playing a non-acoustic set at Newport. I don't know how it was portrayed in the movie, but I'll add an explanation from someone who was there and may know.

According to Al Kooper, who was in the band, they played a few songs and something was wrong. I don't remember quite what Kooper said and I don't want to launch another half a dozen false explanations, but it was either that Dylan wasn't feeling well, or the sound mix was off, or something else important wasn't right. They had a considerably longer set list to play but Dylan decided to end in the middle. He told the band to leave the stage with him. I think he came back for a solo song or two but that was it. Kooper said it was ridiculous to suggest the audience was upset by the non-acoustic songs and that if anything, it was the opposite that was true. They were angry he cut short the set, they expected a longer set and one was planned but not completed. I think that's what I heard Kooper say (in an interview)

Those interested in learning the REAL stories from the beginning of Dylan's career, coming from the horse's mouth, might enjoy reading Chonicles: Vol 1. The is the first volume of his autobiography.

PS - I've never swooned, but I have something over 15 of his albums.

Since you were never a teen girl, I don't think you can speak to swooning, tho that's not stopped you before. And your "wife" sample of one? Well...

Take a look at any of the Beatles performances, Elvis, the Beachboys,....that is swooning.

Thanks for recommending the movie. He was the generation before me. I've always thought his voice was horrible, but adored his song writing. My friend made me mixed tapes in high school and I'd weep when his songs came on. I hitch hiked highway 1 listening to him. And recently shed a tear while listening to this incredible live Van Morrison cover of Just Like A Woman.

I saw him live in the early 90s. He sounded so old and croaky. Incredible he was only in his 50s then.

    Olychick, thanks for that.

I liked Dylan's songs back in the day though didn't have any albums. I loved the movie even if it wasn't exactly accurate. I lived in San Francisco in the early 70's to mid 80's and got to hear great music from wonderful musicians. I even saw Joan Baez once walking through Ghiradelli Square. Those were the days for me.

I've never understood the appeal of Bob Dylan. To me, his "singing" is more "grunting" and "slurring" words.

" I don't think you can speak to swooning, "

I suspect I had more dates with girls of a swooning age at music performances than you did. That's a fluffy comment, it doesn't matter. Sticking to the topic,

He wasn't the teen idol, heart-throb type of performer. Little was ever written about him in the teen magazines feeding swooning-age teenage girls.

It's of course fine to say you didn't swoon over Dylan. Few ever did (check the definition of the word). His music was more intellectual and thought-provoking, his fan base older than those who went for the pretty faces intending to exude sox appeal.

And of course, I shouldn't leave out this - have you ever thought about who his biggest fans are and have always been? Those who respect him as profoundly as is possible?

Other musicians of all genders. No swooning, just reverence.

I'm sorry, I read this too late to watch. I love Bob Dylan and wanted to see this movie, but I had no one to go with. Do you know if it will be repeated?

Edited to add. I was a swooner..S&G, Beatles, Dylan, Beach Boys. Music was my life in the '60s, the best musical decade EVER!

I agree, he's not a dreamboat, swoon-over sort of character (if you go for that stuff — I can’t say that I do).

His voice is an acqired taste. There have been many thousands of photos of him and I don’t think I have ever found one boring.

He seems to know how to look out for himself. He marinated and steeped himself in the music of others early on and became a master.

petalique, he could be a swoon-over sort of character to some, though. Not to me.

I’ve always liked Bob Dylan music. I’ve seen him twice in concert. Definitely not the most exciting. One show, a guy jumped up on stage and stormed him. Dylan didn’t react at all. Security dragged the jumper off of the stage. That was the highlight of the performance.

I like Bob Dylan very much. I saw the movie when it first came out. Thanks for letting us know.

Perhaps inadequately worded on my part. Dylan isn’t a typical swoonable ;)

I suspect a good many swoonables strive to be so.

I remember going to see the movie ”I’m Not There” many years ago at the local indie theatre. A few different actors played folks talking about Bob Dylan/versions of Bob Dylan. One was Cate Blanchett and one was Heath Ledger. I can’t remember the others.

It was kind of interesting how they portrayed Bob Dylan.

"I suspect I had more dates with girls of a swooning age at music performances than you did" = women who know what swooning is and who we swooned over? hahaha! Kinda like, "I know a guy" or "My friend is ..." There were plenty of females who swooned over Dylan. And probably some men, too.

Today, after yesterday’s daylong snow, feels like a Sunday afternoon.

I stumbled upon this and love this guy’s appreciation of Dylan.

He helped me remember the Dylan album I bought, way back — Bringing It All Back Home. He talks about the song, Love Minus Zero and the Baez cover of it on her Any Day Now album (which I also have). [I did not buy many records, but love the one’s I did buy.]

ETA All adults here, but should I ”warn” that this reviewer uses the F-word occasionally, out of enthusiasm.

If your car has an automatic transmission, use the "R" setting to back away from where you are. You can't move in that direction by trying to wish it so.

I believe that was my one movie I saw in a theater for the year 2024.

    I am a longtime fan.

I remember back in the old days, after he was quite established, early to mid 1970s, he was giving a concert at Madison Square Garden. You had to enter a lottery to win the opportunity to purchase tickets. Now that I think of it, I can't recall how payment was made but anyway I did win the chance to buy tickets and went. It was awesome

Then maybe 10 ish years ago, DD and DSIL got us tickets to see him.. It was "different".

I enjoyed the movie, whether or not it was spot on accurate didn't really bother me.

Lily- when I do go to movies ( the one or in a big year, two per year) I almost always go alone.

Around here, they have "deals" for matinees and even showings starting at 10:30 or 11 am. I love those . I don't mind going with people, but I always say seeing a movie in a theatre is definitely something I may prefer to do alone.
