Family Room Layout Help

last month
last modified: last month

We have an oddly shapped family room and I am trying to work out to do with part of the room. There is a opening between the kitchen and family room that is just around 6 feet that splits the room into two sections. The section with the couch and media cabinet is set, but, the other side of the room is TBD. Right now, we are considering a table/chairs and bench. However, wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas. Dimensions are in the image provided. Thanks in advance.

How many in the "family" that uses the space? Is there another place to dine? There are two of you ? Two and a child? Do you entertain?

Some more context with your question would get you far MORE.

The best use of space for one household may not be what works best for the next household.

My sister and her husband are empty nesters. Need seating for 2 5 nights a week, but typically entertain dinner guests 2 nights a week and will have 2-6 guests on those evenings. They also have larger gatherings about 6 times a year with 15-30 guests.

They absolutely need as much formal dining space as possible and have come up with some creative solutions to gain extra dining space in their home.

I live alone and will have a single guest over to eat dinner and watch a movie once or twice a week. We usually sit on the sofa to eat our dinner. In the past 6 years I have had 3 dinners that were sit down dinners for 4-6 people where we used my dining table. It is often used for puzzles, crafts, playing cards, games or expanded kitchen space when I am baking.

For me, I would not add a dining table in this space. I might set a sewing cabinet against one wall and have a small table with 2 chairs that could be used for a puzzle. I would hide 2 additional chairs in a closet somewhere so I could pull the table out and have 4 people seated for a card game or board game.

What do you need in your home? What needs are not being satisfied?

Your sofa and media cabinet don't have to be exactly centered on those walls. You can shift everything over a bit into the middle of the space, so you don't end up with that big "hallway".

We are a family of 4 and 3 dogs. We have a kitchen table that is not far away, but, it would be nice to have another sitting area. I envison the space being used for work on a laptop or when we have others over as more of an entertaining area. However, if there are other ideas that would be appreciated. I do not have a full floor plan. The kitchen is right next to this area and we do have a kitchen table. The question really is what uses can people suggest for such a small area. My idea is in the floorplan. Looking for what others would do with such a small space. Thanks

No idea your kids, but I'd want some interest and some storage, .......

There are tons of ready to go pieces you can butt together, and FILL a wall.

You're letting the opening to kitchen and slider completely define both areas. That amount of passage is unnecessary.

    Add a swivel chair,

Add 42/48" ROUND table, even one with a leaf. It's good for anything! It's a bowling alley size space, but still a nice gathering space. Make the walls visually interesting ( Art!! )
