Need Advice to Update Family Room

last month

I am updating our family room and I desperately need decorating advice. The colours are brown, ivory and blue. I am trying to make it look more contemporary. I can't change everything, due to budget constraints. The brown leather furniture I have now is traditional and it's falling apart so it is a priority to replace.

Would this contemporary beige leather sofa look good if I bought 2 and put them facing one another, one in front of the windows and one under the large wall art? How do I make it fit in the room?

What do I buy as a single chair to replace the current one which faces the fireplace? What do I look for to find a coordinating chair?

We currently have a media unit to the left of the fireplace and it must remain to hold wires. Can you suggest a smaller one that would look better? Should I put a matching media unit to the right of the fireplace as well?

Since it's an open concept layout, I included photos of my dinette and kitchen so the family room can coordinate with them.

Thank you very much, in advance, for all of your suggestions! I am most grateful!

What’s length of current sofa & new sofa you’re considering? What’s width of LR? Where do you sit when watching TV? You currently have a sofa & loveseat. I wouldn’t get 2 full sofas. It doesn’t look like room is wide enough to be able to float a sofa in place of the one chair. Wondering if loveseat could replace the chair & a chair & table take the space where loveseat is now. I’m looking for a way to have more seating that comfortably faces TV & FP. Maybe a swivel chair? I wouldn’t get another media cabinet - the one is enough, Are you getting new tables? A new rug?

Before spending $$ on new furniture I’d play around with a new furniture arrangement to see what might work better & what sizes of pieces to get. I’m thinking you might create a more inviting / comfortable seating with 1 sofa, 2 swivel chairs - maybe 3 or maybe 2 swivels & a loveseat. Thing about loveseats is that usually only 1 person sits on them for any length of time so 3 chairs might work better for seating, Swivels work so great for both conversation & TV watching. If you have a leather sofa consider a patterned fabric for at least 2 of the chairs to put some texture interest in the room. The 3rd chair could match sofa.

    1. The room is not large for the amount of furniture you have in it. As such, go for seating with more slender arms. It is a contemporary and less bulky look. Get a swatch of the fabric and test it against the floors too. Not sure how that tan will look with the reddish floors.

    2. How many are in your household and sit in this room on a regular basis? How many sit on the love seat together? I'd remove a love seat and place two arm chairs there instead and no arm chair on the end.

    3. Do you find it comfortable looking up to nearly the ceiling to watch TV? I'm itching to find another place for the TV but to each their own if you find it comfortable or watch it from the kitchen.

    4. No to a media console on the right. I'd figure out how to get something smaller on the left too. What does it contain?

A family room is usually a casual hang out space but yours looks very uptight right now. Neither sofas are able to use the coffee table as it is now. You need to move the TV to the wall with the art, with a console 25% wider (for the wires) under it. A sofa and 2 chairs is a better choice for seating.

Thank you for your suggestions! The room is 17.5' x 14'. Our current brown leather sofa is 84" long & it's falling apart. I want to replace the traditional style with a contemporary look. The sandy beige leather sofa I'm considering is 87" long. The tv has to stay above the fireplace (due to wall space & sunlight). There isn't enough space for a loveseat where the single chair currently is. I need a new rug & would consider new tables.

Do you think the sandy beige sofa would look good?

We always entertain and need as much seating as possible. Could I put 1 sofa where the current sofa is, a 2nd sofa across from it against the windows and then float a single chair (where the current one is) - possible centring it in front of the fireplace? Getting a smaller console might free up some space?

For ”as much seating as possible” one sofa & four chairs. You don’t have proper space for 2 sofas & people generally don’t like being lined up on sofas. Look for a longer sofa than 87” & with narrower arms for max seating space. Move one of the end tables at sofa ends out for more room for longer sofa. Leave the console where it is. Measure the seating space on current sofa - inside from arm to arm. Use that comparison for seats when looking at new sofas. The arms on the beige sofa look wide - narrower arms = more seating. For the 4 chairs, arrange 2 chairs + one smaller table in corner where the current chair/table loveseat is & place table between the 2 chairs. Arrange the other 2 chairs + a table at opposite end at fireplace corner. Swivel chairs will do magical things to your space. With this arrangement you can push coffee table closer to sofa so it can be used. For the sofa. These chairs & longer sofa will make comfortable & inviting seating.

Here are two functional options for your room. Neither one involves two sofas facing one another because this is not a waiting room. One layout does offer the opportunitye to have a much larger TV screen for viewing.

Thank you for sharing these layouts. In the first picture, the single chair blocks the path from the kitchen to the family room. In the second picture, the t.v. faces 2 large windows and will be hard to see with reflected light. Do you have any other possible layouts? Thank you very much!
