is there a varnish top coat over the existing stain?

I'd try to lightly sand and top with ebony stain.

Please take photos of the entire space, all four sides. The wood window trim harmonizes well with your flooring. Are there other windows in the room with same trim?

The trim is pine. Paint it the color of the walls to draw less attention to it.

You're going to have to get some sample cans of stain to see what best matches the mantle (or ceiling beams, if you want the window trim and ceiling beams the same -- which might be a better route, less heavy-looking).

Every wood stains differently -- the same color stain can look different on different wood species. With pine, you're going to have to pre-condition before you stain to avoid blotchiness, but the problem there is that the stain is going to end up much lighter than it would otherwise (because of the pre-conditioner). You'd probably do better to look into gel stain on pine, but here again you have to sample.

Pine is relatively cheap, if it were me I'd just make new trim pieces for the two windows than go through the headache of stripping them. But that's me {shrug).

I wouldn't paint as in Beverly's example, you need the trim around the windows to visually stand up against to stone and the heavy mantle -- you don't want the trim to recede in your case. When you hit the right stain color, it will look great :0)

I do not find that trim on the windows anything special so why not just paint it like the walls or like the beams IMO would make more sense than trying to match wood that is completely differnt than the trim
