Looks like a big space and it has electricity already.

Have you already considered these questions or are you in the early planning stages:

Does your area require a permit for garage conversions?

What does your homeowner's insurance need to cover the converted garage?

Yes I need look into this but a car will be able to drive in - no toilet or sink.

It will, still be a primary garage like a man cave. But yes I will be looking into that.

I have a gym and fridge in my other garage and set up my art stuff in an area as I only have one car.

Not understanding a need for eating/drinking but no bathroom. Is it a guess room i.e. SLEEPING or is it a party room/man cave? Not the same thing.

You will probably need a vehicle exhaust system since you will continue to park your car in it.

I bought the property and the garage and everything passed code. I will just put a new garage door on. Okay I see there is a lot to consider just starting to look into, everything for 2026.
Any input is great - I appreciate this help.

For all we know there is a bathroom right beside the garage. Is this a standalone building or atrazine’s to house?

Maybe thta is why it is not needed but I had a bunkie once with no bathroom and everytime a guest came into the house the dog went nuts and we all woke up so a big reno to do a bathroom the next year.

The other building is a shed for stuff .
I have a bathroom just off garage.
This space has to remain a garage for resale.
    On a budget.

You need a bathroom. In fact, in most places, you can't call something a bedroom without a bathroom and your allowed occupancy will reflect that.

If it's going to remain a garage, put in flooring that will stand up to cars, like resin or terrazzo.

Can you clarify what bathroom just off the garage means? Is this aj attached garage to a house?

  • PRO

    Yes right off garage door

If it is attached, not a separate building, I see no reason for all the bathroom comments. Ive stated in more than one Airbnb with a converted garage to bedroom and bathroom. Jn the house

If you want a secondary space like garage to be like the inside of a house, you fully rebuild it to all legal habitable space life safety and comfort requirements. New foundation, framing, water management, electrical, plumbing, INSULATION, drywall, flooring. Without that, it’a a sad, really uncomfortable, illegally built and occupied GARAGE GARAGE GARAGE. Not at all like a house.

    Wow ! Thankyou
I have been enjoying the comments.
A lot of people but man caves in their garages - air beds for guests !
    More to think about.

By the way, last time I checked, there were at least six users with the ID "Business_Name_Placeholder" which makes posts confusing. If you can change your public ID to something unique, that would be less ambiguous. You can ask the Houzz Support team to do it for you.

I agree the name is totally confusing and I also like to be able to go look at other posts from OPs sometimes to catch up on dilemmas from them so I understand which OP is which.. IMO Houzz should be able to tell you when that name is used so you need to choose another

I'll tell you when I am staying over any number of nights in a "garage;/mancave."
