You've done a lot already. Are there two modes of safe egress from the room? Is it a basement room?

No - Incredibly, it's not a basement room. The house is a mid-century ranch built on a barrier island in Florida. Since the area is prone to hurricanes, the original owner minimized risk on the south facing wall by making the windows very small. This would never meet code today - it was grandfathered in because it was built so long ago. The house is made out of concrete block, so fire risk is much lower than a stick frame house.

Slat wall and remove the curtains or curtains and no slat wall. Both are overkill. I prefer the curtains. They are more airy and lighten the room.

If you keep the curtains, run them the entire length of the wall with no gap in between. It will look more luxurious and the two separate panels aren’t fooling anyone about there being actual windows there.

A mirror on your proposed slat wall will help bounce light around as it comes in the window.

What ceiling fixture do you have?

Ceiling fixture is an old fan - no light on it. I don't like ceiling fans - but they are a necessary evil in this climate.

Thanks for info. Have you considered adding real windows on one of the non-south walls? Hurricane shutters are better than they used to be.

We talked about adding a real window. The problem is, there are 3 identical bedrooms (side by side) that face the street. In order to keep visual continuity on the outside of the house, we would have to add windows to all 3 bedrooms. At this point, it is cost prohibitive, and I am leaning toward an interim solution that at least helps alleviate the visual boredom. Even a small step is better than no step... I can always upgrade later.

I would take the curtains down. No need for slats either. I think it’s nice as is. Get some art ajd a plant and call it done.

I love those windows! It's a small room, so no need to add "extras" like the slat wall. You've done a great job so far. Go for this feeling--simple with wood pieces, bamboo shades

Just here to say I love your windows & terrazo floors, jealous. My parents had terrazzo floors installed in the 60’s, I remember them saying they were expensive. Since I was just a young kid then I didn’t appreciate them until now. BTW, they’re putting in windows much like those in the new builds in the desert ( Palm Springs area … )

I’d want the curtains on the window wall, not on a blank wall. Or the wood blinds that match the bed frame. No slat wall.

@K Laurence Yes, I was blown away to find terrazzo under that rug. Surprised to hear new builds are getting these tiny little windows... maybe it's a privacy issue? Love Palm Springs - it's the stuff dreams are made of !

JM…… yes, I’ve seen windows much like that on new builds, MCM style. i think it’s a heat issue, I’ll have to go tour them next time I’m out there to see how they’re up to code. I assume there are sliders or folding glass walls adjacent. My 2d home is in La Quinta, about 30 mins east of PS. LQ has become very popular , lots of new builds.

Since the room Is on the small side I think I would prefer just paint, or perhaps a really cool MCM wallpaper on one of the walls, maybe the window wall. I know that ”accent” walls are generally frowned upon on here ( like alot of other things ) but sometimes I like them. Perigold.com & many other sites have interesting MCM papers.. Just a thought.

Embrace the blank walls! They allow nice architectural features like your nice window shape and the roundness of the lamps take center stage!

Those high windows in thta age of home were to let you put a bed there still have a cross breeze in a relativly small s[ace I had a 1956 MCM ranch with those exact widows they were great in the summer open them and we had windows on a adjacemtn wall such a great breeze I see no reason for a slat wall at all. I aslo do not like the drapes with no window. But I do see one window on that wall so at least you will get a cross breeze .

I don’t think it’s a window Patricia, OP suggested they added lights behind the curtain I believe.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting Unfortunately, there are no other windows in the room - just that small clerestory over the bed. That illuminated drapery panel was just a bit of trickery to make my brain feel better. It's an LED strip - good for cozy night vibes , but useless for a cross breeze.

@WestCoast Hopeful .Yeah - this project is more like set design than decorating. It's an ugly dark house - and I so long for the light.
