last modified: last month

The alphabet begins today. Show us your named daylilies starting with the A’s.

Funny for today: I walk around like everything is fine, but deep down, inside my shoe, my sock is sliding off.

See you again on Thursday!

Anzac growing in the shade on the north side of my home.

Apricot Sparkle a new addition to the front of the border.

Arnolds Daughter was added last spring and surprised me with a few blooms.

Aurumn Minaret my tall , late blooming bloom machine.

Awesome Artist is getting established.

Sherry: You did it to me again. Your little funny cracked me up!........I like all your daylilies but my favorite is as usual Autumn Minaret. If I just had the room in ground............Btw: Thanks for starting this and giving me a chuckle.................

Avon Sunrise early in the AM with an overlay of cinnamon on the bright golden yellow base:

Sherry, Awesome Artist is a great color. Thanks for the humor!

Maryl, let's see, which of yours I like best. I think I'll choose Avon Sunrise!

Applique has done very well here!

    Astral Voyager

Allegheny Skyline poly. It is a great flower!

    Happpy New Year!

Sherry - Your oldie A's look great at clump strength, and I like your new acquisitions.

Brad - Great to see Applique and Astral Voyager doing so well for you.

Maryl - I love the look of Avon Sunrise!

    Here are my A's:

    All American Chief

    Applique

    Armed to the Teeth

Allegheny Skyline. It was divided in 2025 so it came up short and less intense color than previous years. I have another clump of it which showed a bit more intense color. but also came up shorter than normal. I still love this one and thank Debra for sending me a start more than 7 years ago when I lived in NYS.

A common winter problem I have--my socks bunch up in my shoes!

Allegheny Skyline is a nice one, but I find it is happiest with some filtered shade, at least later in the day. Avon Sunrise is registered as a tall one. Does Nan also grow Armed to the Teeth?

All American Chief was a worthy Stout.

Hanson's Alone Again is a good grower, not much more than 5 inches.

Alpha and Omega looked good last summer.

Allegheny Skyline has beautiful coloration, but with a muted hue and around five inches, does not scream out.

Apricot Jade I find very lovely, though this evergreen, while reliable here, has a modest bud count. Large glowing flowers. Many people turn their nose at anything yellow or apricot.

A Heart Apart is a large flower, a Davisson that is around 30 inches here.

A Lot Like Love is a large flower held well above the foliage, though not as tall here as some Davissons.

Animals in the Attic has flowers that gracefully twist on tall, sturdy stems.

    Alan Watts is fairly short.

Atacama Oasis is a later-blooming Hanson.

Addicted to Love is a shorter Davisson. Has been lovely the last few years.

    Alien DNA is a Selman.

Ashwood Dark Side has an older form with velvety color. The appeal of dark ones may be waning among daylily fans.

Ashwood Still Night is a good grower. It definitely has a reddish base that often dominates in pics. Like most dark ones, it prefers afternoon shade.

Atomic Inferno. Gossard has so many good ones in this color class. Bright!

Alexander von Humboldt has height that many Hansons don't have. Too soon to judge consistency.

Arnette Zapel, out of Jamie Dockery, has a very nice flower, but like its parent is fairly short.

Brad, a great shot of Astral Voyager, a favorite color of yours and mine.

Julia, Allegheny Skyline looks good in the new space.

Debra, B eautiful shot of Armed to the Teeth.

Mantis, you have a lot of nice ones. A Heart Apart is a very nice color and design. I always enjoy seeing Alan Watts, great color and design. I still like dark ones and both of the Ashwoods are great!

Mantis: A Heart Apart has been on my list for years. I see you got it a couple of years ago. How are the scapes? The couple of Davisson's I've had before both needed staking. Any comments on how colorfast it is for you?............Maryl

A nice group of A's. I don't love the color of Autumn Minaret, but I do appreciate the show it makes in the late summer. I also like Addicted to Love, A Heart Apart and Armed to the Teeth.

    I don't have too many A's.

A Sip of Red has pretty flowers, but has not proved to be a good grower.

I think this is the prettiest Absolute Ripper we have seen.

Aunt Sadie is new to the garden. It is a true spider in the small category.

    That's all for me.

Mantis, Animals in the Attic caught my eye today. I find myself attracted to these wilder shaped daylilies.

You have so many nice Davison dayliles, I have not been impressed with the few I have had. Why are they so sought after, what am I missing?

    Sherry

    last modified: last month

Sherry, which Davissons do you have? I don't think they that they are as sought after as they once were. Some people don't like UFOs. In general, they are vigorous, hardy, large-flowered plants that make a statement in the garden.

I know you have Still the One, which is a great performer here and very reliable. You also had Loud Girls, but I have avoided that one, partly because you noted it didn't grow well for you.

Nancy, I see that A Sip of Red is a Polston.

    sherrygirl zone5 N il thanked mantis__oh

I had Boy Crazy, it left the garden, never had Loud Girls. I do still have Still the One, it has not been vigorous here, slower to establish. i did a photo search and found the last photo I have is from 2021. That tells me it has not done well since then. Very disappointing, its a beauty of a bloom.

Mantis - Arnette Zapel and Alan Watts may be short, but they have beautiful blooms. It looks like Atomic Inferno has a bold, bright bloom and good plant habits.

Nancy - Lovely shot of Absolute Ripper. Mine did not bloom last season.

Kate - I like your patterned daylilies. Agent of Change reminds me of Blue Swallowtail.

Sherry - It's a shame those Davissons were not vigorous for you. Most of them were extremely vigorous for me in Nashville and clumped up quickly.

Asheville White Winged Dove is listed as midseason, but blooms a bit earlier here. Kate has a magnificent clump. A worthy addition to the garden, even if the "wings" are seldom seen here and the bud count is not impressive. Arnold's Daughter I also have and enjoy. Its blooms have been difficult to capture in the sunny summers of June the last few years. Debra, Arnette unfortunately has also been a slow multiplier, but I do like appliques.

Kate: Me too on Approaching Storm. Hybridizer is Norris who is responsible for my beloved Mary's Baby. Wonder how it stacks up against her?...........Maryl

Sherry, I hope Arnold’s Daughter performs well for you. I have had this plant for several years but the massive rainfall in the spring really made a performance difference this past season.

Maryl, Approaching Storm holds color fairly well but perhaps because it blooms early for me? The color seems deeper than MB bit I like them both!!

I really like ALONE AGAIN, ALPHA AND OMEGA, ARMED TO THE TEETH, APPLIQUE and AGENT OF CHANGE.

    Here are my contributions:

    ADENA DENTICLES: New this year

    ABSOLUTE RIPPER: Wonderful plant.

AIN'T SHE NICE: Lovely shade of pink

    ASHWOOD DARK SIDE

ALPHA AND OMEGA: Very nice plant. Attractive when multiple blooms are open.

    ARROGANT B*ST*RD

    ANGELIQUE FRINGES: Love the edge

    AARON BROWN

ALONE AGAIN: I love this flower

ALL THINGS TO ALL MEN: Can be spotty at times.

    APACHE WAR DANCE

ANGELS ON OUR SHOULDERS: Nice pale pink with a gold edge. Mid-Late bloomer.

    That is all from me.

David - Adena Denticles looks good! I didn't get a photo of All Things to All Men last season because I never had clean blooms. It's a terrific plant to use for hybridizing though. None of the kids I've gotten from it have been splotchy. Alone Again looks good for both you and Mantis.

I find ALL THINGS TO ALL MEN is blotchy early in the season, but by the second week of blooms, they seem to clear up.

    AFTER DUNE DELIGHT

    A REAL EYE OPENER

    That is all I have.

It will be interesting to see how Denticles performs in the future. Was After Dune Delight (an evergreen) blooming on fairly tall scapes?

Derrow's Also Known As is a very large edged cream, not as variable in color as JT Davis could be, and consistently taller. (JT just was not a reliable performer here.) It escapes me why Also has not found a niche. I'm sure the name didn't help. It is also only a moderate increaser. Also consistently delights me here and, before division a couple of years ago, had a high bud count. (Collectors in general don't seem that interested in white daylilies.)

I agree that Ain't She Nice is a lovely shade. A reliable bloomer here, but modest bud count.

Aaron Brown is sowewhat less reliable. Last year, for example, flower production was down. But Aaron is a large, striking flower.

Mantis: AFTER DUNE DELIGHT appeared to be around its registered height.
