They generally aren't a long-lived tree.

Dunno Bill, but they grow pretty fast when young. This one may not be even 100 yrs old.

my searches revealed that tree resides near Austin CO (65 mi from the Utah border), which is over 5000 ft. elevation.

At the time the sign was created, the diameter would've been nearing 6ft.

It appears to be a dormant time of year that the picture was taken otherwise it would've had to be dead to look like that.

One of the members at a tree group in that area thought it could be 250 years old, but I couldn't find any comments or confirmation on that.

Big tree none the less.

It would've been difficult to check the age with a tree borer, if it is anything like the insides of other mature Acer ns. I've seen. The grain is almost absent to the eye and interior colorings along with deformities, I've noticed in the structure, being the reasons for that.

This is a young tree. They get much worse as they age.
