Solar shades

If you have new(er) windows that are still under warranty you might void the warranty if you add window film to the glass. Make sure you check before buying or installing film.

I use Hunter Douglas cellular shades with the bottom-up/top-down feature. They have different fabric choices ranging from sheer to opaque to room darkening.

West facing shades in our FL climate need to be fully closed starting around 2 pm in the summer, for both heat control and stopping fading of wood floors and furniture. Our main family room sliders face east and our backyard/pond views, so we can keep those fully open all day. The orientation of the rooms and house make a big difference in how you need to cover the windows in individual rooms.
