There is just plywood underneath. Not in the budget right now to replace carpet or stairs, unfortunately. I like the idea of not painting the bannister; however, can I make it a darker wood than the current honeycomb?

I knew exactly what you meant by a "picket." Just case you ever have to replace one, though, you might want to keep the term "baluster" handy as a search term. Some people also use "spindle."

I don't know how I learned the word "baluster." I pick up shiny words like a magpie. Maybe we should all start calling them pickets.

I think a patterned carpet would make the stairs more interesting.

You can simply purchase carpet runners and have them installed on the stairs.

Either a large scale pattern or a very tailored pattern would work.
