Ever had meat explode in the microwave?

We were reheating sliced lamb roast on a low temperture setting when the whole thing exploded. What a mess! We had a cover over it and it blew it off. I have never had that happen and have used a microwave for several years since 1981. Could it have been the meat? It has worked fine since then.

Wow! That's wild. No idea what would cause that, besides a build up of steam somehow.

Pro tip I learned from a chef- gently reheating sliced cook meat in gravy in a frying pan doesn't toughen the meat as much (or at all) as a microwave can do.

No bone, just sliced meat? Bones might explode as the marrow heats up.

Pro tip: Just dont put your frozen mascara in microwave to thaw. Explosion and black interior.

I've noticed some meats will pop and spatter when heated in the microwave - I think it's pockets of fat/juices enclosed by connective tissue that cause steam to build up rapidly. And lamb is rather fatty, after all...

I have had beef brisket explode while in a microwave reheating many times.

My only microwave explosion once came from a Butternut squash! It was like a BOMB!

I'm unwilling to risk unexpected and potentially dangerous consequences of using a microwave. We're trying to reduce our use of it and are rediscovering very adequate alternatives we all used before they became common.

I've had a couple of those microwave-in-bag vegetables pop and make a mess in mine. The directions say not to pierce the bag. I do pierce the bag in my ever-so-strong Amana - rice in particular.

I've never had an issue with any kind of meat other than it drying out a little. Must have been frightening!

The incident that had me running from the room, then stopping and running for the microwave was a carton of broth. I had a couple of those boxed seafood broths frozen in my freezer and put one in the microwave. The noises coming from that appliance were terrifying, I was certain I'd ruined the appliance but no damage at all.

Elmer, I got rid of my microwave about 20 years ago. I found I was mostly just heating up water and that was easily accomplished in other ways and freed up so much room on my counter. So explosions at my house.

I have no irrational concerns about microwaves. I do avoid heating plastics more than I already avoid plastics in the kitchen. Sometimes I find it to be the most convenient, albeit imperfect, way to reheat a plate of food. Definitely the easiest way to reheat coffee that’s been sitting for a bit too long. Mostly, I use it to defrost. A frozen English muffin enough that I can split it and put it in the toaster. A block of soup, just enough that I can break it up and put it in a pot stove-top.

As for explosions, my biggest messes have come from butter and tomato sauce. After too many butter explosions, I’ve pretty much given up on melting it in the microwave. I do still use the MW to soften it though. Tomato sauce I generally do on the stove, but if using the MW I cover the bowl with a damp paper towel.

I put popcorn kernels in a brown paper bag and microwave it. I also melt my butter alongside for a few seconds. I cover the butter with the plastic cover used to reheat leftovers. But yes, butter makes a big mess. I run to open it at the first "pop"
