Do any of these feel like the right direction, or would you suggest ad

Hi everyone!

We’re in the middle of a full home

renovation and would love some fresh eyes. We’re drawn to the idea of a darker, moodier house, but we’re a little nervous about going too dark long-term.

We’re leaning toward a monochromatic look and are open to ideas since everything is being renovated. I’ve painted a few swatches directly on the house and would really appreciate opinions on what feels right.

The swatches shown are:

  1. Fried Earth
  2. Urban Bronze
  3. Urban Bronze (½ shade darker — hard to tell here since it wasn’t fully dry)
  4. Seal Skin

Curious which one you’re most drawn to, or if there’s a different direction you’d suggest altogether. Thank you so much—we appreciate the input!

I think urbane bronze is a terrific color so I’d lean that way - what’s the roof color? will you be staining the deck as well?

I think too early to say. I see 2 styles of of windows what is happenning there . The front has a very MCM look but the pics you post are homes nothing like yours. This is one MCM look I love including the landscaping to really up the MCM look It is a nice gray and take note of the window trim. I actually did the siding in Raccoon Fur ,on our last home which was 1956 MCM ranch I loved it a bit scary when we first started painting .

I know Urbane Bronze was very popular a few years ago. I sampled it on my house, for trim and garage doors, and it just looked like old faded brown paint! I went with a deeper brown.

My trim & front doors are in Urbane Bronze. I’ve noticed the color appears different depending upon the sheen. My neighbors loved it so much they did their garage doors in it, again, it looks a little different on their house ( higher sheen ). Also, light affects it’s appearance, like any color.

I would not paint wood. Stain the wood on the exterior of the home. You can use an opaque stain that looks like paint but stain reacts better on wood then acrylic paint. Stain will allow your wood to breath. Paint will end up peeling off your wood siding.

Prime the wall you first see as you drive up. Then paint a large area, say 4 feet by 4 feet, in one of your browns. Every time you drive up for a week or so, you will see how it looks.

If dark brown looks too grim, try a deep forest green, like a national park lodge.

This is a medium green exterior in a wooded setting:

Monochromatic in a dark color, like brown, can just look gloomy, IMO. Inspo pics, like the garage you showed are all photoshopped or shot in the best light. If you want brown, do a cream trim and definitely paint the fascia the trim color, that long, roofline is a great feature.

You might try a dark, moody blue, like SW Distance. That with white trim would look great. You'd have to pick the right white. But, you could also do a lighter blue trim in the same family, like Upward, to have a bit of contrast, a bit of the monochromatic.

One little patch on a piece of siding that is absorbing the paint as you paint is not how you decide house color . You need huge boards painted at least 2 coats 3 is better then move them around during th day to see what works .

I see Palmetto trees in the background so you live in a hot climate and that means those dark colors will heat up your house causing more expensive cooling bills. I just cringe at my neighbors here in Texas jumping on the paint it black trend. Dark trim can be be classic but the siding should be a lighter shade.

I agree with Kathleen MK, if you live in a hot climate, those very dark colours aren't the best choice. Do you live in a hot climate?

I agree with Mark Bischak, you need to test the colours on your house. A large sample that you can walk around the house with at different times of day is a good idea.
